PDF Interactivity Issue

New Here ,
Jul 23, 2024 Jul 23, 2024

I've created an interactive PDF with a hover effect that sets layer visibility. I've checked that the effect works in Preview.

When I save/export, the hover effect does not work. The cursor changes to that for a hyperlink, but there is no interactivity.

I know that the interactivity should be visible in the browser I'm using - Microsoft Edge - because I can open other interective PDFs in it with no issues.

What could be causing this problem?

- To what format are you exporting, and why?

- Interactive features (ie. form fields) and layers are two very different things. It's quite possible the Edge PDF plugin handles the former well (or quite well), but the latter pretty badly (if at all).

Hi.

i've exported as both an Adobe PDF and a PDF/A, just to test different formats, but honestly I've no clue which format I should be exporting to.

From what I've seen, the Edge plugin is handling both well, as I have a PDF the does exactly what I want to achieve - a hover effect that sets layer vidibility - in Edge.

I've no apparent way to reverse engineer that into a solution. It's just a PDF a colleague came across somewhere. I followed a tutorial that explained it all, except how to export it.

I appreciate your response, and I'm open to suggestions for how to get this to work.

Why are you exporting it at all, if it's already a PDF? Or are you exporting from another format to PDF?

Sorry, I haven't been clear:

I have an example of an interactive PDF with a hover effect that sets layer visibility, that works well in Microsoft Edge.

I'm building, from scratch, another interactive PDF, and I need to achieve the same result: an interactive PDF that sets layer visibility when you hover over various buttons.

I have done everything based on a tutorial, and it works in Preview, but not when I export/save it.

Sorry, I still don't follow what you're exporting, and why.

A one-page PDF with multiple layers that are only visible when you hover over buttons. I designed all the layers in Illustrator, then in Acrobat I added the hover effects.

The effects work perfectly in Preview, but when I save the file, the effects don't work.

I have no information on saving/exporting for the interactive features to work, and that's what I'm trying to find out here.

You don't need to do anything special to make them work. If they work in Acrobat and Reader they are valid. If they don't work elsewhere the fault is with the viewer. Also, you should be aware that Preview is a very buggy PDF viewer, and it corrupts PDF form fields just by opening the file. I would avoid using it, if at all possible. Definitely don't save or export the files you open in it.

The effects work in Preview MODE in Adobe Acrobat, but when I save the file, they don't wort at all, anywhere.

OK, that makes more sense... Can you share a sample file?
