Question

PDF missing specific letters when using Adobe Print to PDF printer and Aptos font

I'm having trouble with documents printed from Word from a current Office365 installation, whose base template uses the Aptos theme.

Various online sources say the correction is to de-select the "Rely on System Fonts Only" option in the print driver, but that only partially fixes the issue, I'm finding individual letters missing from the produced PDF (particularly, the letter 'f' when not in a 'fi' or a 'ff' ligature).

Thanks for raising this as I was already losing my mind.  I submitted many pdfs for job applications and I only found out recently that my resume has this issue when I was prompted to correct the errors on the job site that I was applying at.  I used Calibri font and it did the same but in this case it was the letters "ti".  When you open the PDF, it looks perfectly fine but when the ATS reads it, the "ti" is omitted everywhere.  I tried copying and pasting the complete word from the pdf and pasted it in notepad.  The "ti" is missing. Operations will read Opera  ons.  This error may have caused me numerous wasted job applications with the erroneous pdf that ATS is unable to read.

Hi @richardk66061184,

Hope you are doing well. Sorry for the trouble, and the delayed response.

The team was aware of the issue, and fixed it with the subsequent releases. Would you mind updating the app to the latest version (2024.005.2039x) and let us know if the issue is fixed?

Root Cause:

  • The issue occurs because the font is not included in the PostScript (PS) file.
  • When the distiller tries to convert the file to PDF, it looks for the font in the system folder.
  • However, cloud fonts, which are specific to Microsoft 365, are not available for other applications, leading to the problem.

Workaround:

  • The current workaround is to instruct the print system to embed the fonts directly into the PostScript file.

Hope this clarifies your question.
