Dear User,

We are delighted to inform you that we have extended support for opening multiple PDF files in separate windows (SDI - Single Document Interface Mode) in the latest updates of Acrobat.

To use this preference, simply go to Preferences > General > Open documents as new tabs in the same window and disable this. Relaunch Acrobat and open the documents, they will open in individual window instances (reference image attached for navigation to the preference)

This option refers to opening links within a PDF. The OP is referring to having separate PDF documents (not linked) open in separate windows instead of as tabs in the same window. It appears that option is gone in the March 2023 update.

Hi there,

We are sorry to hear that. It looks like you are on the new UI of the application. If yes, please try to go back to the old UI as described here https://helpx.adobe.com/acrobat/using/new-acrobat-experience.html and see if that gives you the option you are looking for.

Let us know how it goes.

Regards

Amal

Hi @Catherine28777624i5vv

We appreciate your valuable feedback! We're always looking for ways to improve Acrobat, and we appreciate the time and effort you have taken to share your feedback.

We acknowledge that the new Acrobat represents a notable change; however, we hope that as you get familiar with the new interface, you will be able to be more productive & get more out of Acrobat.

We are actively working on all the currently unavailable features, such as 'open documents in the same window as new tabs' and customizing these preferences. We will address them with the highest priority.

As you get more comfortable with the new interface, please contact us with specific questions on tools, features, or functionalities. We're happy to provide helpful resources and answers to your questions.

If your critical workflows are impacted, you can switch to the old UI from the "Menu" on the top left corner of  Windows OS and View Menu on MacOS. We will follow up with a detailed community-featured post, guiding you to familiarise yourself with the new interface and regular updates on upcoming changes.

Thanks,

Anand Sri.

Adobe Acrobat 2023 ("New Acrobat") needs the option to open each document in a new window. This should be possible without disabling New Acrobat; the option should simply be reinstated.

++ Update

Hi @Catherine28777624i5vv  and all concerned,

I'm afraid that at the time of this post none of the participants who shared a contribution in this topic adressed the appropriate answer to your question.

With more recent updates, All the options from the Current Acrobat (old User Interface (UI) ) are still present in the New Acrobat, they  were modified and rearranged just slightly different.

All the desired Preferences that a user needs are readily accessible by clicking on the "Hamburger Menu" and navigating it.

See slides below:

HAMBURGER MENU :

hamburger_menu2.png

OPEN PDF DOCUMENTS IN A NEW WINDOW :

hamburger_menu2.png

NOTE:

That Preferences appears in this Hamburger menu two levels below the "Window" category; clicking on it will open up that dialog window.

If you don't find some of the old Acrobat Preferences subcategories such as, in Documents and General,  is because they're accessed now mostly through the Hamburger menu or they are defaulted options under the New Acrobat Experience.

Additionally, if you're an old-schooler power user, keyboard shortcuts allows you to work faster.

Hovering the mouse pointer over the Hamburger menu will pop a tooltip, indicating to use  ALT+F keyboard combination to open this menu.

It is important to note that  when the New Acrobat is enabled all documents are opened in different tabs by default.

  • In other words, unless you want to open a PDF document in a sepearate window, there's no need to worry about figuring out how to turn on an off that particular Acrobat feature in Preferences.

Conversely, when you choose to stay with the New Acrobat UI and you choose to open PDF documents in separate independent windows, Acrobat will remember the last state of each of those PDF documents.

So, the next time that you open the Acrobat program those documents will be restored in separate windows again.

If you don't want that behavior, simply close those windows before exiting Acrobat and then exit Acrobat. The next time that you open Acrobat it will continue to work normally with the PDF documents opening as new tabs on the same window.

Bonus Tip

A very fast sequence using keyboard shortcuts to open PDFs in a New Window:

ALT+F           +       W                +      N

Menu          ==>    Window    ==>   New window

@ls_rbls- your answer, although selected as "correct," seems misleading.

It is not correct that "All the options from the Current Acrobat (old User Interface (UI) ) are still present in the New Acrobat, they were modified and rearranged just slightly different."

In fact, Adobe engineering has acknowledged that the option to open all documents in new windows has been removed from the General section, and is no longer available as an option, neither there nor elsewhere.

Having to manually open new Acrobat windows, either through the menu or via keyboard shortcuts, is clunky and avoids the main issue: The Acrobat application used to offer a simple option to open all documents in new windows, without requiring any additional work or input from the user.

While your workarounds may be useful to some people, the fact remains that power users who work with hundreds of -new- (not recurring) .pdf files each day often need to simply have each of those files open in new, separate Acrobat windows. This is not currently possible with "New Acrobat," which Adobe admits, and this affects many users' workflows.

@d3s1gnjet ,

I feel like fool, You are absolutely right!

You've mentioned a key element : power users who work with hundreds of -new- (not recurring) .pdf files each day.

I work with hundreds of files daily too and I did not conducted my testing with new files.

Thanks for catching that!  I made a mistake while testing both UI's.

Keyboard shortcuts doesn't work in the French version, as in the old UI.

There are a lot of bugs like this that should have been fixed before considering a new interface.

Hi JR Boulay,

Thank you for sharing this.

Please let us know if this is occurring with the modern version with a particular application version. Share the Acrobat and OS versions that are in use.

It would help if you could share the screen recording showing the same. Does the shortcut not work at all, or does it work differently?

Do share the process logs (https://helpx.adobe.com/acrobat/kb/acrobat-diagnostics.html) so we can share them with the team.

Thanks,

Meenakshi
