PDF’s unresponsive when document contains a large number of comments

Within our organisation we receive large PDF plans which often require us to add markups. This results in some plans having a large number of comments, in some cases 10k.

This was not an issue within Adobe Reader 11 however since upgrading to Adobe Reader DC the plans with a large number of comments become unresponsive when attempting to zoom, pan, or make any further markups.

We have tried turning off options within the preferences, such as “Show comments pane when a PDF with comments is opened” which does improve the performance, however when the comments pane is opened again, such as to use the mark-up tools, the document becomes unresponsive again.

Is this a known issue and is there anything that can be done to improve the performance of Adobe DC when a PDF with many comments is open?

Hi @Jonny285160337pof

Hope you are doing well and sorry to hear that

Is this an issue with a particular PDF file or with all the PDFs with huge comments? Please try with a different PDF file and check. If the file is stored on a shared network/drive please download it to your computer locally and then try again.

What is the version of the Acrobat DC you are using? To check the version go to Help > About Acrobat and make sure you have the recent version 22.3.20314 or 22.3.20322 (Win Only) installed. Go to Help > Check for updates and reboot the computer once.

Please try to turn off the protected mode for testing, Go to Edit (Win), Adobe Acrobat (Mac) > preferences > Enhanced Security > Uncheck 'Enable Protected mode at startup' > Clik OK and reboot the computer once.
Note: Please turn on the security after testing to avoid any security risk

Also, try to repair the installation from the help menu (Win Only) and see if that works.

Please try to reset the Acrobat preferences as described here https://community.adobe.com/t5/acrobat-discussions/how-to-reset-acrobat-preference-settings-to-defau...

Regards

Amal

Thank you for your response:-

This is an issue with all PDF’s that have a large amount of comments.

This has been reported by multiple users and has been tested on a number of Physical laptops as well as our Azure virtual machines with the same experience in performance.

All other PDF documents are unaffected and perform normally.

The version widely distributed is currently 2022.002.20212, however we have installed 22.3.20314 on a laptop and VM which made no difference to the performance.

We have reinstalled Adobe 11 on a VM and tested one of the PDF’s with large amount of comments and it performs much better and is more responsive than Adobe DC.

We have turned of Protected Mode as suggested but it made little difference unfortunately.
