Plus Sign Missing for Text Overflow

Hello, we recently updated a document in word and converted to PDF. When preparing the form I changed the text size to 8pt and then selected "Multiple Lines" on two of the columns. Now when additional text is added to that field, there is only a scroll bar to notify there is additional text when there use to be a black plus sign. Where did that option go? I have checked my preferences and under Forms > Show text field overflow indictor box is checked. I need it to be obvious there is additional text in the field for receivers of the form.
