Printing problem with 11x17pages Adobe XI Pro

When printing 11x17pages, only half the page is printing. The first page prints fine, but from the second page onwards only half the page is printing.

No I am still having the same issues with the latest update. We cannot use the PCL driver, we lose other functionality like 2-sided when using the PCL driver.

I looked at the document issued when the last update was released again, and it seems that the printing issue was fixed: "3662311: Printing PDF Files Consisting of Multiple Page Sizes to PostScript Printers May Yield Content Placement, Scaling, and/or Page Size Selection Errors". However, it is still not working for me.

We are using Adobe Acrobat XI Pro (11.0.5) and have the same problem. Some A3 PDF documents, when we choose 'Actual Size' and 'Choose paper source based on PDF page size', print the first page correctly, then print the top left hand corner of each subsequent page as though printing in poster mode (but that's all that gets printed for each of those pages). We are using postscript drivers.

The workarounds I found were all in this already (print as image, force change the page size). Since we do engineering work, the scale of the image is important, so it is extremely disappointing that this function does not work properly. 'Fit to Page' won't suit, it seems the way things are now, printing is more complicated then it should be.

There is only one work-around I've discovered in getting 11x17 in landscape to print correctly.  Rotate them to portrait.

Which is tedious in a large document with different page sizes.  And what if I forward this document to a client and the client tries to print it.

Dov needs to come back here and advise us what Adobe is doing if anything about this.

I just installed the new update, 11.01.08 and this error was still not fixed. Very disappointing. This is a big deal to our company, the solution mentioned above is a quick fix but can't work for us as we print hundreds of pages at the same time and this is very time consuming. I submitted a bug report for this as well month ago but no response on that either.

Perhaps an older “Reader” basic version (and probably would be free download) . I’m going to try this next. Perhaps if that can be installed that would allow for making a combined pdf from excel sheets that will print out correctly.

I’ll have to check with our IT guy to make sure it doesn’t conflict with the suite of programs that are new and that it can be a separate piece of software to use.

This is what I have been doing as a work around, open the PDF with Adobe Reader X. However, running Adobe Acrobat Pro and Reader can cause other problems so just be on the lookout for that.

Perhaps it was fixed with 11.0.9...

I at least, have a similar problem in versions 11.0.12 and 11.1.13:

Printing a A3 landscape pdf with several pages, only the first comes out unscaled and correct. The following page can be anything from a thumbnail on A4 portrait to 140% on A3 landscape. But, never correct.

We are printing on a Xerox WorkCentre 7830, driver 5.351.8.0N 2014.02.19, I believe that is a PS printer.

I have switched to Nitro Pro 9 so solve the problem: No problem!

Where is https://forums.adobe.com/people/Dov%20Isaacs and the rest of Adobe?

Don't they care that people cannot use their products and convert to something else? I looks very arrogant.

Anyone alse know a fix? Printing 1 and 1 page is not a solution, neither is fit to page as we need to print to scale. (it does not fix the problem anyway)

Since my name was used here …

Most of the Adobe staff members who come by here, including myself are not part of Adobe's support organization. We tend to view scan these forums, mostly on our “free time” (whatever that means) and contribute as best we can including, where we can, trying to . But we are not Adobe Tech Support.

That having been said, I have taken a very strong interest in checking the print issues discussed in this thread. I personally have had access to several Adobe PostScript 3-based printers (Xerox, Canon, and Ricoh)supporting paper sizes as large as 12x18 inches. In recent years, I have not been able to duplicate any problems printing 11x17 pages from Acrobat either on Windows or MacOS.

A number of years back, in fact I did observe problems of this type, including problems when dealing with PDF files with mixed page sizes. In each case where there was a problem, it was traced back to PostScript drivers from specific manufacturers that attempted to override the setpagedevice commands setting page sizes and graphics states operators in the PostScript generated by Acrobat or Reader. For PostScript devices (as opposed to other devices), Acrobat and Reader generate their own PostScript based upon the device's PPD and the settings the user specifies in the print dialog. Chaos can ensue if a printer manufacturer's custom PostScript driver plug-in tries to modify this generated PostScript to provide so-called “added value features.” Typically, the problems I saw in the past were remedied if I disabled the printer manufacturer's driver plug-in or used a simplified driver without the manufacturer's “secret sauce.” The reason why you don't see the same problem with some other PDF viewers is that they don't generate PostScript, but rather print using Windows GDI which doesn't enable a number of the advanced features that Acrobat and Reader provide for PostScript printers.

How can you alleviate these issues? You might try seeing if there are newer PostScript drivers for the device in question that you can download and install. In the past when we (i.e., Adobe) or some of our customers pointed out these problem to the printer manufacturers, they adjusted their PostScript drivers not to muck with the PostScript coming out of Acrobat and Reader and/or fixing their PPD file. If there are no newer drivers that fix the problem with the particular printer manufacturer, you may try reaching their technical support folks and reporting the issue. If they cannot fix it, they will usually work directly with us at Adobe to find where the Acrobat/Reader - driver conflict is.

when printing an autocad generated pdf, i set my setting to actual size and tick, choose paper source by pdf page size. i am having an issue where the first page always prints fine and the second pages onwards prints distorted and cut off. i am using windowds 10 64 bit adobe xi pro and printing to a xerox 7830 printer. This is happening with a number of devices in my company and is a common waste of man-hours at the moment.

My first step in cases like this is to upgrade the printer driver. I’ve seen a similar case (only first page prints correctly) a few years ago after an update to Acrobat. A newer print driver fixed it. I am not familiar with this particular printer, but other Xerox printers i’ve used are offering different PDLs, so you may want to use the PCL or PCL6 driver to see if that shows the same problem as the Postscript driver.

Did you read Dov Isaacs​ answer? If indeed the printer's driver is trying to mess up Adobe's postscript, that would explain a lot of problems.

As of July 2019 and few patches for Adobe XI later - the issue is still persisting.

I can confirm we are running Acrobat XI, updated to the latest patch 11.0.25, yest it does not change or fixes anything.

As printers we are having issues with a Canon Digital Production Presses, for which there are only PS drivers provided.

As we mostly print mixed media publications (often exceeding 1000pp) in single and double sided mode, with Document dividers (those thick cards / separators with ears sticking out beyond the width of a document) and various finishing options in one pass.

As the main content is A4 and the Dividers are 222mm wide (A4 tall), the faceing page is printed correctly and the reverse and following pages are shifted say 1/2 of the page up, sometimes top left. Excluding dividers, which seemingly are printed fine.

A bit of a workaround is to manually set the PageSize to be of the largest papersize to be used (in here reflecting the Dividers site 222mm x 297mm), send it as Actual Size, with Setting PageSize based on the Document Size UNTICKED. Then on the machine selecting pages that are to be printed on a regular A4 media and setting them to Fit To Page, leaving the pages to be printed as Dividers (different Media) untouched.

This is extremely inconvenient.

I can also confirm that the issue is present with other Cannon Presses we have got, but those come with PCL drivers and there it handles it well.
So it sort of confirms the issue being the PostScript printer driver, rather than anything else. Unless proven otherwise.

Canon (not "Cannon") offers a number of different PostScript drivers with their printers. Some of the PostScript drivers are proprietary and don't properly handle the “passthrough PostScript” generated by the standard PostScript drivers. Some others are more generic and work better, not interfering with the PostScript which is generated by Acrobat (or Reader). You may need to contact Canon support for help with this. (Note that Canon offers a number of digital press solutions – some offer direct printing of PDF using the Adobe PDF Print Engine technology built into either EFI RIPs sold with the Canon digital presses, others use Adobe PostScript 3, and yet others use CloneScript - various third party “emulations” of Adobe PostScript which are often quite dicey!

Hi Dov;

Thank you very much for your time to reply so promptly to my post. Appreciate that.

Our situation is a bit more difficult, due to the fact that we are talking about presses which are developed by OCE and somewhat re-branded with Canon logo.
They are not running EFI rips but OCE Prisma, which we have got all the Canon Printers controlled by.
The PRISMA RIPs and subsequently its drivers are different, as the "additional" elements of the drivers that you pointed out in this thread as most often being an issue, is what makes them favourable in our environment.

We do not print pretty things, where colour accuracy and nice looking artwork is reproduced.

We are more of a information printers (documentation for Clinical Trials and Pharmaceutical market), where colour is important only to distinguish from B&W content. Yet the simplicity of the driver allows for multiple and different types of finishing and mixed media content  to be programmed (within the driver) in as simple way as typing in the page numbers or ranges and defining the additional options for finishing). In order to do that with EFI solutions, you'd need JobMaster / Impose/Compose Suite, which allows for a purely visual operation of this sort.
So the advantage of the Prisma Drivers / RIPs in Production Printing as ours, is not to be beaten by anything else, considering the speed and flexibility.

But unfortunately no generic Canon drivers work with them. The Drivers need to be specifically designed to support this environment and exact printers including the speed license for the machine. So basically there are 2 PostScript drivers and no PCL at all.

And they behave exactly as described earlier. We think to take this issue further to OCE in Venlo, BE so that they could investigate and hopefully develop a fix or revised driver, to address this, as this has been going on for years now ...

And it looks Acrobat is not a true issue here. At least this is what I am finding.
