Printing problems; editing problems

I am trying to edit a 150-page book (10th edition). Printer supplied me with a PDF, which I have been editing.

I need to print a proof with facing pages on landscape format 8-1/2 x 11" sheets. (I tried printing"booklet" format but the back sides of the sheets printed upside-down.)

Printing "multiple" format resulted in printer stopping after approximately 20 sheets; restarting resulted in print run starting from beginning again. (Same problem on two printers -- different brands.)

I was eventually able to print (in separate sections) a complete set of pages. However, in spite of page #1 appearing alone on one page on my screen, the print version kept printing two pages per sheet -- with odd-number pages on the left.

I need a proof showing the actual layout, with even pages on left and odd pages on the right -- as the book will be printed.

After experimenting, I was able to insert a blank page to make the proof look like it should, but I don't believe this should be necessary -- doing so results in the on-screen pages no longer being in the correct order.

Although the screen version of the file appears as it should, when printed, there are text blocks containing random words and paragraphs of scrambled and missing letters. Sometimes reprinting the page results in different "scrambling"; sometimes the same. I was able to "fix" this (sometimes) by slightly editing the text.

As I mentioned, the same problems occur with two different printers, leading me to believe the problems lie with the Adobe Acrobat software.

I understand that Acrobat's editing function is not meant to be a tool to create material -- but that is only what I am trying to do -- edit something -- a process that should be relatively simple and straightforward.!

I should add that I have edited a couple previous editions of this book and encountered the same problems. I managed to find work-arounds (usually under a deadline) but now I have had enough frustration.

I am a long-time Adobe customer.

An easy solution is to print pages 2-150, then print page 1 separately. To fix the "upside down" issue, you need to look at your printer Prperties--changing the binding location to Top Binding caused the pages to print in the same orientation on my device.

The text appearing scrambled could be a few issues--including fonts not embedding properly--or the printer(s) or computer not being able to process the job properly. The fact that you could print out the job in sections but not as a whole, leads me to suspect the printers not being able to process the job. However, it could be the computer too--you might want to google "how to turn off Windows print spooling".

Worse case, you could click on the Advanced tab and select Print As Image.

Not sure what this info has to do with the problem--is it important?

Finally, what type of edits are you doing to the PDF? If possible, I would always want to edit the original document source.

David:

Thanks for replying.

It looks like you are offering solutions for Acrobat Pro on a Windows computer; I am using a Mac (iMac) running Monterey 12.2.1

I tried adapting your suggestions but nothing seems to have helped.

I assumed (maybe mistakenly) that I could create a "booklet" that I could staple together (saddlestitch) that would resemble the final printed book. I hoped for two book pages on each side of  8-1/2 x 11 sheets that, when stacked and stapled (down the center, not the edge), would have the pages on order and right-side-up. No such luck.

I did find a way to print one page per side of a sheet, front and back, in order, and right-side-up. I'd also have to trim the pages and staple the left edge-- but it's not what I want.

Also, I can't find a Mac version of Windows print spooling, and the "Advanced" print option does not offer "Print as Image".

"10th  edition" refers to the fact this is the 10th edition of the book. Some of the earlier versions were available in another format, but a new printer for the latest ones has been providing only PDF versions for editing and updating. I've managed to edit them, but have kept encountering the problems I described.

I've posted here in hopes someone can offer me ways to fix the font and printing problems.
