"Save a Copy" only works sometimes?

I need to add notes to every Purchase Order that comes to us, and sometimes they come with a digital signature.  When I try to edit these I get an alert telling me that it cannot be edited because of the digital signature.

Most times it just says that, and that's it.  But infrequently it will suggest that I "Save a Copy," which is excellent because "Save a Copy" magically appears in the File drop-down menu.  But when it's not suggested "Save a Copy" is not available.  I can't find any rhyme or reason why sometimes it is possible and sometimes it is not.  I'd love to be able to stop having to print them, scan them, and edit the scanned version, which is basically what "Save a Copy" is doing for me.

Is there a way to have "Save a Copy" available at all times?

Hi,

I think that depends on what signing method are the users employing with some of those PDFs.

In which case, verify if on the PDFs that you are not able to work with, some type of restriction was added to those documents.

Good thought.  Do you think it has something to do with whether or not they choose to "lock" the document after signing it?  Not to belabor the point, but I find that most of my POCs respond better to questions when I leave less to interpretation, and I'm not even sure what other types of restrictions there might be.

Yes that is what I meant.

It is better if you set  restrictions on a PDF to just allow to print, fill and sign rather than the users having that liberty.

A PDF can be restricted with Reader enabled rights, and password enctyption to control the opening or editing of the documenting.

Additionally, restrictions can be enforced to also not allow editing,  printing, disassembling the document, copying content, or commenting, for example.

Some programs like web browsers with built-in PDF viewer, however, may not respect those PDF restrictions.

If you can confirm that some users are opening your PDFs in web browsers, that could be one of the issues.

In Acrobat "Save a copy" means "save an unlocked/unsigned copy".
So this menu item is available only for signed PDF files (Reader Enabled PDFs are signed PDF).
