When I scan in a document it is a dark dark grey on my screen. It is a setting on my computer because when I send the document to someone else it is fine. How do I fix this?

Hello Debsbuddy,
Sorry for the delayed response and inconvenience caused. As per the description above, the scanned images are too dark, Is that correct?
Changing/adjusting the brightness and contrast while scanning a document is a scanner/hardware feature, if your scanner supports this, you can go to the scanner advanced feature option and can adjust the brightness and contrast before scanning any document.
You can also refer and try the suggestion from the following Adobe discussion How do I lighten a page when it scanned to dark? (Edit PDF)
Feel free to update this discussion for any further assistance.

Anand Sri.
