Setting line thickness permanently, instead of adjusting the thickness on each line drawn.

How can I adjust the thickness of a line permanately?

For example, when I use the measuring tool, The measured line comes as a thickness of 5. When I change it on the one line, it does not stay throughout my document. 

Can I have this preset to only be a thickness of 1?
