Should I receive an e-license after downloading Acrobat 8 Pro

Community Beginner ,

Is the e-license for acrobat 8 pro prompt supposed to appear with the volume license supplied on download page?

Not that I am aware of did you use the serial number listed on the page next to the Acrobat 8 Professional download?  Did you successfully remove your previous version?

I branched this to a separate topic as the previous discussion so we can work to resolve your difficulties without getting off-topic for the download process.

Hi Jeff,

I am having this exact same issue. Every time I try to use Acrobat, it prompts me to download an e-license, which inevitably fails.

I did indeed use the serial number listed on the page next to the Acrobat 8 Pro download.

Previously, I had a trial of Acrobat 11 installed, but it was removed prior to installation of Acrobat 8 Pro.

Thoughts?

Kelso per the document referenced by Jeep57 you should not be prompted to download an e-license if you are using the serial number offered on http://helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/policy-pricing/creative-suite-2-activation-end-life.html.  Which operating system are you attempting to utilize Acrobat 8 on?  Did you have the retail version of Acrobat 8 installed prior to the activation servers being shut down?

Good Morning Jeff,

I installed using the executable and serial number found on this page.

Acrobat Pro 8.0, S/N: 1118-1414-1955-8737-8172-0350, OS: Windows 7 (x64)

I did not have a retail version installed on this computer prior to shutdown of the activation servers.

I suppose I should uninstall and start over from scratch to ensure I've done the process correctly?

Are there any registry keys or remaining files that need to be removed manually?

Thanks!

You are welcome to try.  Acrobat 8 however was never tested with Windows 7 so it is entirely possible that you may receive unexpected behavior.

As for registry entries we do have an Acrobat Cleaner tool you can try utilizing.  You can find the Acrobat Cleaner tool at http://labs.adobe.com/downloads/acrobatcleaner.html.

Good news! It seems I've gotten it to function properly using the following steps:

  1. Removed all Adobe software from computer, for me this included the following:
    • Accusoft Prizm Viewer (PDF-viewing plugin)
    • Acrobat Professional 8.0
    • Adobe Bridge 1.0
    • Adobe Flash Player 11
    • Adobe Reader XI
  2. Restart to for changes to take effect
  3. Remove all traces (registry entries, remaining files, etc) of Adobe software from computer, using two 'cleaning' utilities:
  4. Restart for changes to take effect
  5. Begin installation using executable and serial provided here

However, this leads me to a new issue... The main functionality I'm looking for here is the ability to print to PDF. This function does not appear to work at this moment-- but it was working after I updated from Acrobat 8.0 to 8.3.x... While using 8.0, the port is set to LPT1 rather than the expected PDF port. However, in order to get the program to update, I have to set my system time back (for reference, I used January 2011).

I am hesitant to do this though, as I believe updating is what previously caused me to receive the e-license prompt every time the application runs.

Any suggestions?

The printing/creating PDF functionality will most certainly not be functional in Windows 7.  The way print drivers were implemented was changed during the time period of the Windows Vista operating system release.  I believe it was further modified when Windows 7 was released as well.

You may want to post to the Creating, Editing & Exporting PDFs forum - http://forums.adobe.com/community/acrobat/creating__editing_%26_exporting_pdfs to see if there are any workarounds available.

Thank you for all your help, Jeff!

I've created a new thread, as per your suggestion, in the 'Creating, Editing, & Exporting PDFs' forum.

Jeff, it seems updating from 8.0 to 8.1 (or above) resolves the print issue.

However, any form of update, whether through the program or manually (using incremental updates), causes the e-licence/activation prompt to reappear.

Is there a solution for this?

I am not aware of any solutions Kelso.  I have sent a message to one of my colleagues who is more familiar with Acrobat to review this and the associated thread.

Your posting though in the Creating, Editing, and Exporting PDFs forum may receive more results though as users there have probably attempted to use Acrobat 8 on later operating systems.

Kelso can you please try manually applying the updates up to 8.3.1 and seeing if you still face the same difficulty?

Sounds great. Thank you again for all your assistance with this issue!

I already have... I've tried twice, both attempts from a clean slate with no Adobe products installed or remaining files/reg. keys. The first attempt I started with an 8.0 installation and manually update to 8.3.1-- the issue persisted. On second try I wiped the slate clean again, started with 8.0 and manually updated to 8.1.0-- issue persisted.

Kelso I still have no additional updates to provide.  I have a to do item to respond back to your thread if there are any additional solutions that you may be able to try.

If you have a pressing need for Acrobat you may want to consider upgrading to Acrobat XI which has been tested and works successfully in both Windows 7 and Windows 8.

Okey dokey.

In the mean time, I've got a workaround... It only appears to work with Acrobat 8.0...

I open the print dialogue for whatever document I'm working with, select the 'Adobe PDF' printer, and check the 'Print to File' box.

This will output a PostScript file, which can then be imported into Acrobat Distiller to output a PDF.

Cumbersome, but it will work until I can find a better resolution or convince my company to spring for an updated version.

Good Afternoon All,

I wanted to provide an update. Hopefully it will help someone along the way.

I was finally able to get this working!

Starting with a fresh slate: I uninstalled Acrobat and using this cleaning utility, then restarted.

Next, I downloaded this AdobeConfig.xml file and extracted it to the setup directory. (Note, keep another copy of this file handy-- you'll need it later).

Then, I installed Acrobat 8.0 using the setup and licence credentials previously mentioned in this thread.

With the installation complete, Acrobat works, but the 'Print to PDF' functionality' is, as we have discussed, broken.

Then, I manually updated from 8.0 to 8.1 (you can find the incremental updates here).

After applying the 8.1 update, the e-licence prompt will appear every time you start the application.

This can be remedied by overwriting AdobeConfig.xml (this is why I had you save a copy earlier)-- it can be found in \Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Acrobat 8.0\Acrobat\alm_config_files\.

After overwriting that .xml file, the e-licence prompt does not appear and 'Print to PDF' functionality works flawlessly!

Please let me know if you have difficulty following these instructions so I can make them clear.

Thank you all for your help in this process.

Final update:

I decided to install the remainder of the incremental updates after yesterday's post.

This brought me from 8.1 up to 8.3.1-- and it is still working.

I did not have to overwrite the AdobeConfig.xml file again after the intial 8.1 update (which changed it from Volume licencing to Retail).

Hi Kelso:

Thankyou for such a detailed post. Unfortunately the link you mentioned to download 8.1 does not list an update for 8.1. Is there an alternate site to download 8.1 from?

Thanks

Akshay
