Windows 11, Adobe Acrobat Pro DC Version 2021.007.20099, saving split-by-bookmark PDFs to a Dropbox folder (Dropbox permission for Adobe Acrobat is turned on).
I suddenly cannot split PDFs in Acrobat Pro DC and receive this error message "The file may be read-only, or another user might have it open..." However, if I select the target folder as "A folder on my computer" and navigate manually back to the folder, I don't receive the error message. The target folder is a Dropbox folder. This was not an issue until this week (Novermber 15, 2021). I do not have a preview pane open in file explorer and I generally work in Opus Directory. I see this question a lot online and none of the answers work. Please help!

By introducing Dropbox in the mix, all bets are off regarding which side this problem is to blame on. Are you using "Smart Sync" with Dropbox? If so, turn it off for the folder in question and see if that fixes your problem.

Thank you Karl! Smart Sync is already off - I wish I could see what changed between last week and this week - I'm guessing either an Adobe or Dropbox update. My work-around was to create a seperate folder on the desktop and pin it to quick access and direct all split files there, then move to apopriate file (not very quick!).

It was the low hanging fruit 🙂 And, I run into problems with Smart Sync on a regular basis (but so far not with Acrobat). Unfortuantely, to dig deeper, we would need to understand exactly what the interface between Acrobat and Dropbox is and how both sides work with it. This means that only an engineer at Adobe can look into this in more depth. You can create a bug report and hope that they can reproduce the problem and that they consider it to be severe enough to be fixed in an upcoming release: http://www.adobe.com/products/wishform.html

I am having a similar problem just trying to save the PDFs to my hard drive...

Are you using Dropbox, or are these local files?

Adobe was able to answer my question. The Adobe Acrobat Pro needed to be updated.
