Text field imported from InDesign disappearing in

I created chapters from a book in InDesign, exported to preprint PDF. When I edit the pdf headers disappear. Help!

How do you edit the PDF? My understanding is that you should avoid editing PDFs an return to InDesign to edit any mistakes/modification.
