Acrobat told me it was doing an update, and when it was finished, it would not allow me to open it, saying contact my network administrator?

If you still experience the same behavior, please try removing the application and running the cleaner tool (https://www.adobe.com/devnet-docs/acrobatetk/tools/Labs/cleaner.html).
Reboot the machine and reinstall the application from the following page: https://helpx.adobe.com/acrobat/kb/acrobat-dc-downloads.html.
Check if that helps.
