We cannot add an 'X' in a real estate contract box. Both of us have tried on two computers.

This has been happening a lot now and so I need Adobe support. We have tried placing an X in a box but all we get is a black dot. We called Legal Hotline at VirginiaRealtors.org and had them try to edit their PDF. It worked fine. Why is this happening to us? It does not work on either of our computers. Thanks, Toby

[Moderator moved from Adobe Stock Contributors to Acrobat.]

Which software did you use to create the document (if it was created by you)?

Which software & version are you using to complete the form?

I'm guessing this is an option button or checkbox, but you didn't say.

Both types of fields can be formatted in Adobe Acrobat DC to be an X, check, square, etc. If the form was created in InDesign, the choices are infinite.

To change the formatting,

  • Acrobat Pro needs to be used, not the free Reader
  • The PDF needs to be unlocked or you need to have the password to be able to make edits
  • If you don't have both of these, the creator of the form needs to do the formatting.

If it's working at their end and not for you, please tell us what software and version you are using to view the PDF:

  • Adobe Acrobat?
  • Adobe Acobat Reader?
  • Adobe Reader for Mobile?
  • Preview?
  • Chrome or another browser?
  • FoxIt?
  • GoogleDrive?
  • Something else?

You told us how many computers, but that's not the issue. If you are not using Adobe Acrobat or the free Reader, the form may not display correctly.
