Where has the check box gone?!

Community Beginner ,
Oct 01, 2018 Oct 01, 2018

I have just updated to Acrobat Pro CC 2009.008.20071 and now when I bring up a list of comments on a PDF design file there is no longer a check box to tick off changes as I go. I used to filter by unchecked comments to keep track of what fixes had been actioned. The check box is no longer there.

There are more approval options (completed/apprvoed/add check box etc) in the hamburger dropdown but that is surely not the process for checking off each edit?!

I have identified a temporary (but less good) workaround - (shift + k) which ticks the corner of the box but it doesn't then take you to the next comment as occurred previously, meaning that you need to click on the next one. This actually slows down workflow significantly in a graphic design setting where changes are actioned at speed and timed/. I have read in other forums that some designers used to press the space bar to tick and move to the next change to be even faster. @

To those of you for whom the new changes are are a deal breaker and you need to revert to Acrobat 2018 for workflow purposes, I have outlined the process here: How to Get the Old Version of Acrobat Back.

Nice one!

It's probably possible to disable the automatic Reader updates via the Registry.

By the way, I spent several hours today trying to see if it's possible to get rid of the hated blue "Share" button. I was able to get it to stop working (ie, nothing happens when you click it), but not to remove it entirely.

Until Adobe decide to maybe bring back the «Unchecked» empty box for the checkmark, please use the keyboard shortcut Shift+K to check/uncheck it.

Thank you for the Shift-K workaround -- until Adobe decides that isn't modern and takes it away, too.

This is a Whisky Tango Foxtrot.

PLEASE bring the check mark back. Making it a 3-step process is NOT modern and definitely not streamlined. This is a huge disappointment.

Please bring it back. It didn't need to go. What were you thinking Adobe.

If this were truly a "modernized" experience, it would be a toggle under preferences to alter the default state. First rule of UI/UX, when redesigning something, never add more clicks than the user is accustomed to.

Please bring back the checkbox.

+1 for bringing it back. The current solution is not intuitive in the slightest.

The Shift-K combination is potentially hazardous for users who switch back and forth between, say, an InDesign document and a PDF while making proofreader's changes. Typing anything with just the Shift key as modifier can lead to unintentionally typing a character into the InDesign document — if the user doesn't remember to activate the PDF document window first. When there was a visible checkbox in the PDF, that couldn't happen because the user had to click in the PDF window to check the box.

Please bring back the checkbox.

And maybe switch the checkbox modifier key to a safer one. (Why does Preferences use Command-K? How many users access preferences so often that they need an easy command key for that?

As a trainer and in my role of technical support, I do! Many times per days, in many Adobe apps.

I'm so glad that I'm not the only one! It's driving me insane to have to perform an extra click to check something off.

Definitely not a fan!  the Comment check mark was critical to our workflow. Users used this religiously as they checked off the comments.   Any chance of reverting back to the previous...?

Me and my team of 40 people work daily on so many PDFs from our clients, that its a huge loss of time and resulting productivity if we need to activate/deactivate comments by two instead of a single click. Each PDF file has sometimes more than 100 comments in it and now its a pain and by no way intuitive to work on.

I don't get why this was not implemented optionally. For example let use re-enable it by editing settings for comments.

Please let the form follow function, not the other way round. Its a huge design flaw if design negotiates functionality/productivity

Yes PLEASE put the checkmark box back on the main comment window!!!  I never would have updated to this new version if I had known this feature would now be buried in a menu.  this doubles the amount of time to check off a change (in a document with hundreds of comments, this is a big deal). Really bad idea.

in the meantime for those of you as frustrated as I am with this counter-intuitive change, here's a Quick Fix:  Open time machine, revert back to previous version of Acrobat.

Thanks for doubling my workflow when reviewing client comments, solid design choice right there. I can now charge my client double for the same job! *Slow clap*

Please return the checkbox.  I frequently work with documents with over 800 comments.  Checkmarks help me keep track of where I am, and to go from 800 clicks to 1600 clicks because of an update is statistically appalling.

I totally agree with what others have said here. Removing the checkbox serves no purpose whatsoever while absolutely killing our productivity using this feature.

I use the comments a great deal when writing books. I found the right-click - but it is extremely NOT intuitive and not helpful at all. Please put them back.

PLEASE bring back the check box immediately

A visible check box IS modern - it's functional, efficient and will always be.

Yes adobe we actually use the comment box and would like it back.

"intuitive to use" well you have failed at that.

"modernize the commenting experience" is it modern to make things more difficult? once again you have failed there. Perhaps you meant to say "microsoftise the commenting experience" ?

Do the people who decide on these changes actually use your products?

"modernize the commenting experience"??? This doubles the work. Please have people that actually work in your programs provide feedback on your proposed changes to the work environment before you make changes that effect people's efficiency in their work. Please bring the checkmark box back where it was. Try working on things that make our jobs easier instead of making them more frustrating and time consuming!

This is madness. Bring back the check box. Removing it for a list menu that needs more clicks and more mouse movement isn't "modern".
