Question

ZOOM : Bug or "feature"?

  • March 3, 2020

When using Acrobat (any version) on MacOS I can use:

- "cmd +" =  zoom in, and

- "cmd -" =  zoom out.

When using Acrobat DC on Windows 10:

- "ctrl +" =  zoom in, and

- "ctrl -" =  placing a sticky note on the page…!!!

I can't believe this is "by design", can someone confirm it to me?

Thank you

Hi Amal.

It's been over 5 years since this bug was reported, is there any hope of it ever being fixed?
Before I retire if possible. Thank you.

Hi @JR Boulay

I just checked the keyboard shortcuts on my Windows 11 machine, version 10.0.22631, and they are working.
Acrobat version: 2025.001.20458. I tried it on Classic UI and Modern Acrobat as well

Hi Tariq Ahmad Dar

I'm glad to hear it works on your computer, but it doesn't solve my problem. Which has been going on for too long.

Hélas, following all these steps and trying different settings did not change anything.

Thank you for your time.

No problem, anytime.  Hopefully Adobe can look into this more closely.

I was also reading about the language packs that are downloaded from the MS Store. Maybe this is another underlying piece of the puzzle since Adobe supports its own language packs.

Thank you ls_rbls

- I ran this issue on my previous HP and now on my new Dell, so it's not a dusty key issue.

- Shift Ctrl 6 does nothing.

- Fn Ctrl 6 does nothing.

- On French keyboards the "-" is always on the "6" key, hence the usual expression "Tiret du 6".

- The issue is the same with the "-" key located on the far right of the keyboard, above the + key. See screenshot.

- I cannot test with an external keybord. I don't have one, I bought an extended keyboard PC precisely so as not to need it. 😉

- This shorcut (ctrl 6) always works as expected on MacOS using the French Mac keyboard, from Acrobat 3.5 (my first Acrobat version) to Acrobat DC, and with any other software.

- My Dell is new (1 month) and it comes with a "Dell updater" software wihich manage drivers updates.

- This issue affects Acrobat when I use the "France" keyboard (both of them), but the shortcut works fine when I use the "UK" keyboard (Royaume-Uni). See screenshot.but I use an AZERTY keyboard for about 40 years and I'm not going to change it today.

- This issue affects Acrobat only (Pro and Reader), this shortcut works as expected with Foxit Reader, Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator, etc.

I suspect Acrobat since this shortcut works fine with other software, and since it is not a hardware issue and not a driver issue.

What do you think ?

JR,

Would you mind sharing a picture of the  keyboard layout of the Inspiron ?

Seems to me like you're using like a UK extended layoout.

Also, it is worth noting that the " CTRL+6" combination is the keyboard shortcut that inserts sticky notes in a PDF without opening the commenting tool bar.

I was checking out earlier  UK extended keyboard layouts and if you notice, in most keyboards  the "Fn" (function) key is next to the left CTRL key .

From a PC repair point of view, I would say to check that the function key or the number "6" key are not stuck (or loose) due to debris, dust particles, exposed to heat or cold, or even if a previous liquid spill happened before, for example.

To be sure you can also  perform this old school trick:  press  the SHIFT+CTRL+" once then press SHIFT+CTRL again and one more time to test and return your keyboard to normality. See here for more keyboard troubleshooting tips at the hardware level: https://www.wikihow.com/Repair-Dell-Laptop-Keyboard-Keys

If tat doesn't work I would stand by my assumption that this is not a bug or an Adobe Acrobat design behavior.

This is a keyboard layout issue where some of the keys, the touch screen  (if it has touchscreen) and the mouse pad could also be conflicting, somehow.

That said check the manufacturer's website for known issues and download and install the latest drivers (if available).

To be certain, if my theory is correct, you should be able to plug in a USB external keyboard and you should not experience this behavior.

If the external keyboard works without a problem AND most importantly, without modifying region settings, language settings, nor localization, then the keyboard pad could be physically defective.

Verify and observe more closely what is the Fn key purpose in your keyboard pad.

If  your keyboard pad is a UK extended version with more than 2 or 3 character symbols shared over the minus (-) key, that is another observation that should be considered in all these troubleshooting equations.

Allo, allo?

Is there anybody out there?

The latest update did not solve this annoying issue.

Thank you Try67!

You're right, this occurs when I'm using the French keyboard. When I set it to "English" (ctrl -) zoom out as expected, and (ctrl 6) creates a sticky note (as expected?).

But this is not a solution since my keyboard is always settled to "French".

I can confirm that in Acrobat XI (on Windows, at least) Ctrl+(-) zooms out, as well it should.

Maybe you're using a non-English keyboard that's sending a different kind of hyphen?

I just bought a new Dell Inspiron, I installed a new Acrobat Pro DC (+ Photoshop, Illustrator and Bridge) and I still have the same annoying problem.

Can you help please?
