Each time I try to open a PDF the error message says Adobe is out of memory and it shuts down.

We're sorry for the trouble you had with Adobe Reader, please reboot the machine once and try emptying the TEMP folder and see if that helps. This error usually occurs, if you run too many memory-extensive applications simultaneously.
Check for any pending updates of Adobe Reader from help>check for updates, reboot the machine after updating Adobe Reader.
Try disabling the Protected Mode in Adobe Reader and check [Edit | Preferences | Security (Enhanced)].

Note: Disabling the Protected mode is only for testing purpose, please enable it back.
If the issue persists, try resetting the Adobe Reader's installation files from help>repair installation(only for Windows), reboot the machine after repairing.
What is the current version of Adobe Reader installed? To identify refer Identify the product and its version for Acrobat and Reader DC
What is the version of OS installed? Are you getting the error message while opening a specific PDF or with all the PDF?
If you still experience the issue, use Acrobat cleaner tool to remove Adobe Reader Download Adobe Reader and Acrobat Cleaner Tool - Adobe Labs
Reboot the machine and install the latest version of Adobe Reader from Adobe - Adobe Acrobat Reader DC Distribution
