Enormous usage of the main memory by the RdrCEF process, which causes the computer to crash.

Hello,

several computers always download the latest update, which has been faulty for months, despite having adjusted the registry keys. Every update since 21007 has the same error and makes the software unusable.

If a computer has one of these Acrobat Reader versions installed and you try to open a PDF, you can observe in the Task Manager how the above-mentioned process devours all the RAM of the computer until it finally crashes. In addition the CPU usage is extremely high.

The only solution is to install an old version of Acrobat Reader. Unfortunately, this is only a very temporary remedy, as it is almost impossible to deactivate automatic updates.

Will there be a patch in the near future to fix this problem? What exactly does the RdrCEF process do? Are there any settings in the software that influence it?

And yes, I already contacted the Adobe Support and got the following answer:

Hi Janneee

Hope you are doing well and sorry for the trouble.

Please go to Edit > Preferences > Page Display > Under Rendering,  Uncheck 'Use page Cache' > click OK and reboot the computer once and see if that works for you.

Amal

Hi Amal,

thanks for your reply. Unfortunately, the settings had no effect at all. I have used them on several computers that have this problem.

The CPU load is also extremely high for such a process.

Kind regards,

Janneee

Hi there

We are sorry to hear that the issue still occurs.

Please try to remove the application using the acrobat cleaner tool https://www.adobe.com/devnet-docs/acrobatetk/tools/Labs/cleaner.html , reboot the computer once, and reinstall the application using the link https://get.adobe.com/reader/enterprise/ and see if that helps.

Hi,

We had the same issue (Version 2022.002.20191); rdrcef.exe was consuming all memory and after having no more memory, the computer crashes. we noticed that it behaves crappy if we enable pac file for proxy. if we connect directly to the internet or directly connect through proxy instead of using configuration script, it works fine. I think that there is a problem rdrcef.exe handling configuration script for internet connection while it tries to connect internet. As a temporarily solution, we had to rename the files.

This is a workaround solution, I appreciate if you could solve the issue permanently.

Regards

Evrim
