Error message "no error" when trying to assemble an XFA based PDF in latest version of Reader.

A client is getting an error message that says literally "no error" and then the PDF document is failing to assemble. It happens erratically, but once one XFA assembly fails it fails repeatedly unless the machine is rebooted. Rolling back to an earlier version seems to resolve the issue (but not satisfactorily). Forms are being opened via a .net process start command in a windows form (relying on MIME type), rather than being opened through a browser. Has anyone any idea what could be causing this issue, please?

We would like you to test the following steps. 

1. Please ensure that Acrobat/Reader is closed.

2. Goto the computer registry, and navigate to Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Adobe\Adobe Acrobat\DC\IPM

3. The registry “b4304509” should be set to 0.  You can double click to change, and set it to "0".

 

4. Now, navigate to the below-mentioned paths, and create a new registry-  See attached screenshot. 

 

Path (Reader): HKEY_LOCAL

Thanks, but that doesn't really address the issue at all. The problem intermittently manifests across multiple files, and then happens on every xfa form on that installation until rebooted. The same forms work fine for hundreds of other users. That doesn't seem at all consistent with a document level validation script.

Hope you are doing well and sorry for the trouble you had. Please try installing the latest available version of Acrobat Reader 21.001.20138 Optional update, Feb 15, 2021, from the help menu>select check for updates. Reboot the machine and check. 

 

Let us know if you still get the same error message with the latest version.

For some reasons Adobe Acrobat DC can't open files, but Adobe Reader DC has no problem opening them.

Even more when openning file pop-up appear "no error". Still can't open the file. Also message "Please wait... If this message is not eventually replaced by the proper contents of the document, your PDF viewer may not be able to display this type of document." appear. But I am opening these in Adobe Reader.

No problem for Adobe Reader though. It opens all the files and has no problem. Both Adobe Reader and Adobe Acrobat are on the same PC.

What could be the problem?

In order to open the XFA document (LiveCycle PDF form) in Adobe Acrobat Reader. You need to Reader Extend the form. Is it done?

I don't understand your question.

It is not my form, not my creation. It is government created forms. 

Formulare - ForexeBugPublic (gov.ro)

It worked last week. Adobe Acrobat could open this forms.

It doesn't anymore. I can't not open any form.

I've installed Adobe Reader and it has no problem with these files.

So my question is why Adobe Reader can open these documents and Adobe Acrobat can not.

Did you tried to open these documents? Did it worked for you?

I've sent printscreen above, that it does not on my PC. Have you seen them?

On the same PC, I have Adobe Reader and Adobe Acrobat.

Adobe Reader is opening any pdf files.

Adobe Acrobat it does not, but just last week opened those files.

by deleting the DC key form abobe registry path Adobe Acrobat restored all the settings.

I am running into the same issue that you are.  The problem is that deleting that registry key fixes the issue once, but the next time I load any of these XFA-type documents, the error returns.  These files open without issue in Reader, and worked just fine until 3-4 days ago.  Were you ever able to get this fixed permanently?  I've tried repairing the Acrobat installation, as well as uninstalling/reinstalling, but I'm stuck.

Yes unfortunatelly, it was the same for me.

I was glad at first, hoped it was ok.

Now I keep on deleting registry key or keep one file opened at all time, during work.

I have this issue too but with Adobe Reader, Deleting the registry keys out makes no difference, even appdata folder data too, we run this on multiple terminal servers and they are all beginning to exihibit this with these forms for all users.

We are running the latest varsion of Reader 2021.001.20140 but the issue started happening last week,

When the file opens it comes up with No Error, you click ok, it comes up with No error again, and then displays the message "Please wait... If this message is not eventually replaced by the proper contents of the document, your PDF viewer may not be able to display this type of document."

Just to add, I think I have resolved it now by completely deleting the entire HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Adobe folder, we only run reader so it is not such a big deal, but other people may run other Adobe products so be careful as it may break them.

Please try the following steps and share with us through  https://documentcloud.adobe.com/link/send/ -  

1. Create a dump from "Task Manager" when you see the “no error” prompt.

2. We see that deleting the registry at the path HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Adobe folder, is working. Please share the registry hive. You can right-click on it and select “Export”.

Unfortuately I have spoken too soo, the problem is resoved by removing the Adobe registry key but does return a short period after.

I attach screen grabs of the task manager after each error, I also attach an example of the pdf that Adobe errors out on. It can also be directly downloaded from the LMS uk website https://www.lmsuk.com/ConveyancerZone/Pages/Download.aspx?dem_id=2551868

After the registry is cleared again, the document can be opened, but a random time later the error returns.

I managed to narrow down the issue to the registry entry HKEY_CURRENT_USER\\Software\\Adobe\\Adobe Acrobat\\DC\\IPM specifically the b4304509 reg key. When this is set to 1 we get the error but set it to 0 and the error goes away, however something will periodically set it back to 1.

 

I found the below post as well which suggests to just delete the key and set permissions to stop it being re-created.

We don't have the registry key b4304509 as we use Adobe Reader, I can however pretty well replicate the error easily now, With the Adobe registry key deleted I can then open up the Adobe documet, however if I go into Edit, Preferences and make any change, the Adobe form will then not open.

I attach 2 registry keys before and after any change. We are using terminal server, 2008r2

You should still have the key, it'll be under the path HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Adobe\Acrobat Reader\DC\IPM.
