I have a user running Windows 10, Adobe Reader DC.  When he tries to open a .pdf from a network drive he gets the following error:  "There was an error opening this document.  Bad file handle"  He can move it to his pc locally and open, and we are able to open web documents.   I have tried doing a repair, remove and install, and switching the default app to edge and back again and have been unable to fix.  Any help is appreciated.

Hi Matthewl,

Sorry for the delay in response.

I hope you already have found an answer to your problem by now. If not, you may try to whitelist the network drive path and check if that resolves your problem. Launch Acrobat/Reader, click Edit>Preference>Security(Enhanced)

Let us know if that helps.

Hi @naveen_1193,

Sorry for the troubling experience.
Please ensure your copy of the application is updated. To check for any pending updates, launch Acrobat> Help > Check for updates.

Let us know how it works. If you are still experiencing the issue, help us with the following information:

  • OS name and version.
  • Acrobat or Reader version.
  • Is it certain files that give you trouble or all the files?
  • What happens when you open a file stored locally on the machine?
  • If possible please share a video of the workflow that leads to the error.
