Hi, am new to using Acrobat Reader, and to the forum.
Have just done a few hours' work on PDF doc - mainly adding comments with Sticky Notes and some highlighting.
Went to Save As ('Save' greyed out) and getting Error Meassge 135, saying it could not be saved as there is a problem reading the document. I saved the same document yesterday and no preblems.
Any help would be much appreciated! Thinking maybe another way to save the document?
(Screenshot of Error Message attached)
Thanks Amal, and sorry for my delayed reply.
I was slightly nervous of doing that as thought there was a possibility that my work would 'disappear'. As it was, I could still see it on the screen, even though i could not save it!
I copy and pasted all comments onto a nw PDF and think I discovered what it was that had corrupted the PDF - one of the comments woudn't open, and showed another error message referring to 'dictionary keys' - no idea what had happened/what I had done but pretty sure that

Hi AnnaMas
We are sorry for the trouble. As described yoiu are unable to save the PDF and getting the above messsage
Please try the following steps and see if that works for you.
1. Open Google Chrome;
2. Drag the PDF file into the Chrome window. By doing so, the PDF file can be viewed in Chrome;
3. Right click on the opened PDF file, and click 'Print';
4. In the pop-up window, select 'Save as PDF' for the Destination, and click Save;
5. When prompted, choose the target folder, input the name of the new file, and save it.
As such you will have a new PDF file, which is error-free and can be opened by Adobe Reader/Acrobat without error messages. However, the bookmarks created in the original file will have to be re-established.
Let us know how it goes
Regards
Amal

So problem sorted, but thank you for your help.

I have the same bug. I had successfully saved a file with comments a few days ago. Today, after adding more comments, I get error message "The document could not be saved. There was a problem reading this document (135)."
The work-around using Chrome does not preserve comments.

Hi,
I am having the same problem of saving à PDF file which contains comments and markups. I also got the error 135 and couldn't save the file with another name. Unfortunately when I try the Chrome solution you suggest above I can now save the file but on the new file créated I can no longer access and change the comments and markups on the document !
Do you have any other solution ?
Thank you in advance,
Yvonne

I am having this EXACT problem. This is ludicrous. And moving the document to a browser window is not an adequate fix.

Same problem here. I have been commenting for many hours, and now it cannot be saved. that would cost me quite a bit of work.. This is unacceptable by open source s/w let alone a professionally priced one.
Unless this is fixed asap, i have hard time justifying any further effort to work with the sw on my side.

Same problem here - this workaround does not preserve the comments, which are of utmost importance. Has there been any fix for this?

Hi there
We are sorry to hear that. The new optional update for Adobe Acrobat/Reader DC (V.21.01.20138) is now available. Please update the applicatio from the help menu > check for updates and reboot the computer once and see if that helps.

I updated it to the newest version. But I still get this problem. Is there any way to solve it?

Hi there
Is this a behavior with a particular PDF file or with all the PDFs that you try to save. It seems like there is something wrong with the PDF when it was created. Please try to recreate the PDF from the original source file and see if that works.

I had a user that was having this same issue. While our issue wasn't because of 'dictionary keys' it was related to a comment another user made. We are on Macs, and I was able to delete the corrupt comment using Preview on our MacOS. Once comment was deleted I saved the file through Preview, launched Adobe Reader or Acrobat and was able to save the file without any issue. For your testing I would suggest creating a copy of the file to test. I was able to determine which comment was corrupt by process of elimination. When I kept trying to delete that one corrupt comment it just kept popping back up when I did this in Adobe Reader or Acrobat.
Hope this helps,
Eugene

@Eugene22732105fl2v What do you mean when you say you "saved the file through Preview?" I am having the same problem, and have identified the corrupt comments, but they keep re-appearing after I've deleted them. How were you able to delete yours?
Thanks,
Mary Ellen

@MaryLNC Sorry I meant Preview App. If you're on a Mac it's the built in app for PDFs before you change it to something else like Adobe reader or Acrobat. First use Adobe Reader or Acrobat to identify the corrupt comments. Open that PDF in Preview App then try and delete those corrupt comments. Save the file and see if the issue persists. If it persists you probably still have a corrupt comment, which could be a message in the comment or even a textbox.
Good luck!

Thank you, Eugene.
I was lucky enough to not have too many comments in the doc that was giving me problems and was able to incorporate them into the original doc that didn't have any comments associated.
@Amal. - I would love to know what causes the issue so it can be avoided in the future.

Hi Mary
hope you are doing well, there could be many reason that may corrupts the PDF file and leading to the above error message.

This is the most insanely unhelpful reply I've ever seen in my life. What is this error and why is it happening? Why say anything if you're only going to say nothing?

I opened in Preview. Duplicated. Then save as and choose the Quartz filter to "shrink file". Then open the file in Reader and it's fine!

I am also having this issue. I've made many annotations to a document and saved, and now when I go back to edit some of those annotations, I can't save my changes! What do I do? This is extremely frustrating.
