How can I open a PDF on my Mac with OS X El Capitan using Adobe Reader DC?

I have Adobe Acrobat DC installed on my Mac Desktop that is using operating system OS X El Capitan Version 10.11.6.  I received a PDF file that calls for a version of Adobe 5.0 or newer to open it.  When I click on the file to download it nothing happens.
