how do i get adobe reader into the open with dialogue box

When I click on attachments I always get the option to open with several programs but Adobe reader is no always on the list.

Let me explain.I have received an email (hotmail) with an attachment. I clicked on the attachment (download word) to open it and it gave me the open with dialogue box but Acrobat Reader was not listed.

But the email opened up into two parts and the original message and attachment was on the right hand side of the screen and on the left hand side of the screen what looked like a complete page had the attachment but not all the message that my friend had sent.

Now if I clicked on the download word under the attachment (on the left side of the screen) it gave me an open with dialogue box and the first thing that was there was Adobe Acrobat Reader and I could now open the attachment which was a scanned document. This time alongside the attachment was a PDF image.

Previously (on the right hand side of the screen) the attachment just had a shaded picture of an envelope alongside.

Does all this make sense to you?

If you have any idea as to why this happened or how I can get Adobe Reader always into the open with box I would be so grateful.

Many thanks once again for your help for this old man.

Regards,

Anthony

Hi AnthonyWood,

Thank you for sharing the screenshots. I am sorry for the trouble though.

I have removed the screenshot for the security reasons.

I see that the attachment you have received is not a PDF file, but an email. The sender had attached a copy of another email to this present email.

That is the reason when you click on the attachment, it opens the another email at right which consists of another attachment which is a PDF file.

Then when you click on download option at right below the PDF

Hi AnthonyWood,

To understand it correctly, you click on attachment directly to open it and get the open with a dialogue box. Adobe Acrobat Reader is not listed in the options.

Next time when you click on Download and open the saved file, you get Adobe Acrobat Reader on the list.

It seems that you are checking your emails on the browser.

That might be the reason you do not get Adobe Reader on the list. first time when you try to open the attachment directly it opens the PDF in the browser.

When you try to open the attachment directly it opens the PDF in the browser or shows the option available on the browser.

Next time when you download the PDF, it provides you the option available in the system.

Could you please confirm if you are checking your emails on the browser.

If yes, let us know the browser name.

It will be helpful if you can share the screenshot of the list you are referring to.

To share the screenshot use insert image icon in the reply box as shown below in the screenshot attached:

Capture.PNG

Then click on Choose File and browse the location where you have saved the screenshot.

Select that image file and click on Open below > Insert Image.

Let us know if you referring to something else or if you need any help.

Meenakshi

Dear Meanakshin,

You don't know how long it took me to find how to insert a screenshot here. The link you provided did not open to a box that showed the icons above so I went to the chat I started yesterday. Anyhow at least I have got through to you.

Yes, I opened my email in my browser (Firefox) but it makes no difference if I open it in Internet Explorer. Hotmail (Outlook) can only be opened in a browser as far as I know.

Anyhow, the attachment shows what happens when I click on the attachment in my email list. It opens to a double spread as shown. On the right hand side you can see an envelope and if I click on download now on the right hand side it says the file is an .eml.

But if I click on the download button on the left hand side it says it is a pdf.

Open with on the right hand side lists several programs to open but not Adobe Reader. On the left hand side if I click download it immediately offers me Adobe Reader.

Why can I not get Adobe Reader included when I click on the download on the right hand side image.

I can see at the moment I have inserted the screen shot as a separate reply. I am about to try to include it in this reply. Could you then delete it for me in the separate email. Also could you cove up the email addresses for me at the top for my privacy?

Again I do thank you for your help, staff member.

That is the reason when you click on the attachment, it opens the another email at right which consists of another attachment which is a PDF file.

Then when you click on download option at right below the PDF file, it offers you to open the file in Adobe reader.

This is the designed behavior of outlook when you directly click on the attachment, it will open the attached file at left and divide the window into two parts.

You may try to open an email which has a PDF attachment in it and then try to click on download, you will get Adobe Reader to open that file.

I hope this answers your query.

Please keep posting us if you have any questions or need any help.

Meenakshi

Dear meenakshin83966505

I am so appreciative of your time in answering my question. I thought there was something wrong with my computer or with my own lack of knowledge that Adobe Reader did not always appear in my Open With dialogue box. You have explained it well that it will be there if it is a pdf file.

It certainly answers my query and again I thank you so much.

It is comforting to know that when I have a problem that someone there will assist.

Regards,

Anthony

Thank you for your explanation as to why I keep getting emails like above with the Chinese writing but my question was answered by meenakshin and there are all the green stars saying Correct Answer.

So I don't need any more replies please, especially in Chinese as I have no idea what they are saying and as I said they are not in the discussion above. The only way it got into the above was when I put it there.

Have I not marked it as a correct answer?

I am so grateful to Adobe for all your help
