I'm having trouble getting a PDF to print from the latest version Adobe Reader. An employee gets a ton of PDF sent to her by email that needs to be printed off. And for months now we get the same error of "Error document cannot be printed"

Here is what troubleshooting steps I have went through to no avail on resolving the issue.

- Made sure adobe was up to date

- Uninstalled and reinstalled Adobe Reader

- Uninstalled printer and reinstalled printer

- Installed latest printer firmware

- Restart of the computer numerous times

- Restart of the printer

- Repair of the current adobe installation

- Added another printer to computer

- Followed below instructions found in the forum

If the issue persists, use Acrobat cleaner tool to remove Adobe Reader Download Adobe Reader and Acrobat Cleaner Tool - Adobe Labs

Reboot the machine and install Adobe Reader from Adobe - Adobe Acrobat Reader DC Distribution

Any help would be appreciated, not sure what else to try at this point.

Hi Reaganh,

Apologies for the delay in response, I hope you would be able to fix it by now.

If the problem still persists, a stated above, you are getting the error document cannot be printed, and you have already tried the basic troubleshooting, you may try the following steps:

  • Try to repair the PDF file. Do Save As to PDF/A format and check

If it doesn't work,

  • Try to print the PDF as an image. In print window click on Advance > Check Print as Image and check

If that doesn't work,

  • Try to turn off the Protected view. Go to Edit (Windows), Adobe Reader (Mac) > Preferences > Enhanced Security > Turn OFF the Protected View and Uncheck Enhanced Security restart the application and check.

Note: Switching OFF the security is for the testing purpose only, please turn ON the security after testing, irrespective of the result

You may also refer to the troubleshooting steps provided in the help article  - Troubleshoot PDF printing in Acrobat and Reader
