JAR files are Java ARchives. They can be an executable, meaning you can run them by double-clicking them (if Java is installed properly, of course), or via the command-line, or they can be added to an existing Java project and provide additional functionality. But they can't be opened in Adobe Reader, which can only display PDF files.
