Hello Douglast,
We're sorry for the trouble you had with the 'Search' function in Adobe Reader, are you not able to search in one specific PDF or with all the PDFs?

Navigate to Adobe Reader's Preferences once from Edit>Preferences>Search>uncheck 'Enable Fast find' and click on "Purge Cache contents" Click OK and try searching again.
If the issue persists and you are not able to search in all the PDFs, use Acrobat cleaner tool to remove Adobe Reader Download Adobe Reader and Acrobat Cleaner Tool - Adobe Labs
Reboot the machine and install Adobe Reader from Adobe - Adobe Acrobat Reader DC Distribution
Let us know how it goes and share your observation.
Thanks,
Anand Sri.
