Mac Pro PDF

PDF stands for Portable, however when a document is converted to PDF on  Mac it becomes a monster. a 50kb word document becomes 3 Megabytes. Just scanned a 16 page color brochure and the end product is 14 Megs. If i do this on a PC then the document becomes Portable not unsinkable.

how can the settings in the Mac can be changed in order to have the results we need?

scanned using my HP scanner and saved as PDF. When i use the same scanner and save to PDF on a PC the document is very 'light' unlike those saved on the Mac
