When I visit websites offering information in pdf form, clicking on the icon has always opened the pdf for viewing before I decide to save the information. Now when I try to open these pdf's I am first asked to to save the file. I don't want to have to save every file I click on without seeing the information first.
Can I go back to 'open first' status or has something changed in Reader?
Reader hasn't changed. But your browser probably has. Firefox recently stopped supporting plugins that had formerly launched helper apps directly inside the browser window.

Nancy,
Thanks for your reply. I tried Internet Explorer and it worked fine. It offers me a choice - open or save. I had been using IE but problems forced me to Firefox. Google Chrome also wants to save rather than offer a choice.
Back to IE!?!?

Eventually ALL browsers will phase out ALL plugins because 3rd party plugins pose so many security headaches.

Chrome certainly has the option to view a PDF in its own windows - something it does without using Acrobat Reader, and which can't show all PDF ties correct. I think Firefox may too. But these are probably questions for the forum for those products, Reader can't fix them (it is deliberately blocked). IE currently can use Reader, but Edge - its replacement - cannot.
