What is the best method to automatically organize pages in a large PDF document. For example, I have 500 pages that were scanned out of order. How can I organize the pages by a word or name?

You can drag and drop pages to reorder them in the Pages panel (older method) or the Organize Pages tool (newer method). There is no way to organize by content.

 

Note: the bookmarks will still go to the correct pages, but they will now be out of order and will need to be put into the correct order with drag and drop as well.

 

You can't edit pages with the free Acrobat Reader though. You need Adobe Acrobat (paid).

If the pages can be OCRed successfully then a script can be used to organize them by their content, but it requires custom-made development. And of course you will need to have Acrobat to do it.
