PDFs open in free version not paid one

I initially got the Adobe Acrobat free trial and then signed up and paid for the product. However, every time I open a pdf I get an error message saying that it has opened in the free version and needs to convert to the paid version! Major pain

Start Acrobat and use File > Open. You decide which app runs if you really want both.
