I am filling in an application form and have uploaded a passport photo in a filed created for it but the photo appears in landscape on the form even though it appears as portrait when I open the photo (jepg file) in Preview). I am using Version 2017.012.20098 on a macbook pro.

Don't use Preview. It's a buggy application that corrupts PDF forms just by opening it.
Stick with Adobe Reader for best results.

I am using Adobe Reader. It is Adobe Reader that is causing the photo to rotate in the form.
What I meant was: IF I open the photo in Preview, it is correctly oriented (portrait) but when it is imported to the form in Adobe Reader, it is rotated 90 degrees, even tough the space in the form is a portrait shape!

My guess is the image is already rotated before you import it.

Well, it is not rotated when I import it to any other programme: word, Powerpoint; web applications etc. just Adobe Reader.
