You can try using this tool to remove all traces of previous versions of Reader:

http://labs.adobe.com/downloads/acrobatcleaner.html

Then, download the full offline Reader installer from

http://get.adobe.com/reader/enterprise/

and run it immediately after restarting your computer.

This solution did not work. I cannot load a PDF directly from my browser and when I try I get the error message as above. I tried de installing Acrobat, running in IE9 both 32 and 64 bit versions and still I cannot open files. If I save the files to my hard disk and either double click or load from within Acrobat they all work fine. Some files cannot be saved so I really need to get this resolved, any ideas please?

I'm having this same issue. It just cropped up a couple of weeks ago. I've tried the above suggestions - in fact, I've gone so far as to reinstall Windows a couple of times as well. We're on Win7 64bit systems. I'm in the same boat in that some of the documents my users need cannot be saved to the desktop.

Found a solution that worked for us in another Adobe forum:

1. Launch Reader

2. Choose Edit > Preferences > Security (Enhanced) > uncheck "Enable Protected Mode at startup"

3. Click on "OK" button

4. Exit Reader

5. Launch IE and open the PDF file

I tried this and the Enable Protected Mode at startup was already unchecked. If that seems to be the same case for anyone else here is my solution. I saved myself some time and headache by installing a previous version of Adobe Reader. Go to the Adobe Reader download page and click Do you have a different language or operating system? Put in your OS, language and then choose another version.

Does that happen for online or local documents, or both?

Does it still happen after you've done the uninstall/reinstall that Claudio suggested?

If so, and assuming that you are on Windows, can you check with the Task Manager's Processes tab if any AcroRD32.exe instances are running?

Until we find a solution for your problem, can you download the PDF file(s) to your local disk, and open them from there (right-click on a PDF link and select Save target/link as).
