Re: How to enable scroll bar?

The problem is back.
In build 23.6.20320.0 the scroll bars disappear. My mac is set to show allways. Acrobat is set to never.
The only way to show scroll bars is to launch Acrobat switch to Mac settings disable scroll bars allways and turn on again. Now the scroll bars appears in Acrobat. After a restart of Acrobat the scroll bars are disabled again.

I would think if Adobe and the people working on this could just revert to the old version of the program until lthey can figure out how to give users the tools they need to do their jobs. That would make everyone happy and reduce so much stress!

I think the best solution is for Adobe to take a real hit. They should learn a lesson and provide software that is this bad, for free until they resolve their issues. Instead we pay a monthly fee to keep them swimming in money and they have absolutely, no motivation to be the best anymore, like the good old days. Hello to "Open Source software", programmers working for tips that want to be the best at what they do because they care unlike Adobe today.

Meenakshi, your company used to be amazing. This scroll bar—that enables only incomplete pages to be read—is abysmal, and not worthy of Dr. Warnock and Dr. Geschke. Your company must be on the way out.

What is it that you don't understand about the maelstrom of complaints concerning the missing scrollbars that prompts from you the glib "we hope that as you get familiar with the new interface you can be more productive"? That verdict is in. And no, I am not going to expend my time retraining myself to use the new interface. I will ditch your product and find one from a vendor who values his customers' time.

This new version, 2023.006.20320, is creating big headaches for professional users who depend on these tools. Adobe acknowledges that they've updated the scrolling framework, but they won't acknowledge that by doing so they've debilitated a large number of their users. Either that, or they haven't figured it out yet.

Here's what I did, but this works for Reader only. If you have a CC subscription for Acrobat Pro, I'm not sure that you can download it from anywhere but the CC app -- which no longer gives the user the option for rolling back to a previous version.

1.  Uninstall the CC version.

2.  Download the non subscription version from here, then install it.

3.  In an open document, move the cursor to the right near where the scroll bar should be.

4.  Press alt-down, then grab the scroller with index finger and thumb on the trackpad.  As long as you keep your thumb on the trackpad, the scroll bar will stay there. (I happen to be writing this on a laptop; I'm sure there's some equivalent using a mouse.)

Also, keep in mind that alt–shift–down-arrow and up-arrow allows you to move page by page through the document. You can also go to specific pages with command-shift-N, or typing in the new page number on tool bar on the right side.

UPDATE: The alt-down-arrow move to make the scrollbar appear, described above, does seem to work in the CC version of both Acrobat Pro and Reader.

You don't have to uninstall the CC version. If you just go to View>Disable New Acrobat you can get the old version back. That might not be the exact right words, since I've already done it, so what I see now is Enable New Acrobat, which I wouldn't do if you paid me.

They claim that will remain the default (the old version) unless you change it. They also claimed that View/show/hide>scroll bars would work, but that's not a thing, so I don't believe much that they say. He even tried accessing my computer remotely (this is for the older version) and couldn't make the scroll bars reappear. Thanks for nothing.

I had crashing issues with it all day as well and I have a call scheduled in the morning if anyone has any more details they want to add for me to share.

I don't have anything hinting at Disable New Acrobat. I've looked through everything. I'm so sick of Adobe. Disgusting that we have to pay montly to be frustrated.

Welp, I disabled new acrobat and it did not solve the issue.

I did get a brief teasing view of the slider bar that promptly disappeared.

can use the shift + option and arrows to move up and down, but I can't control where things stop and start, which makes it difficult for me to zoom to assist my failing vision.

This is insane and I may have to go back to reading PDFs in Preview mode (I do not want to do this).

Some of us pay a lot of money for this functionality that has been destroyed.

And I have vision issues, so being able to zoom to the right size and scroll through the document easily with a scroll bar (not my touchpad) is an absolute necessity.

Does any one do UD(L) testing at Adobe?

Many thanks to all for the ideas, thoughts, and commiserations in this thread.

Le Sigh.

This only works to partially fix things and does not give you the horizontal scroll. You can use the hand tool, but if you need precise scrolling, it's pretty useless and extremely frustrating. It's like Adobe thinks we're all casual users instead of professionals trying to do our jobs. They could put this idiot scroll solution on Reader and no one would care. They need to figure out who their pro users are and give them what they need to do their jobs - we're the ones  paying for this now-nearly useless software.

This problem is a nightmare. I edit approximately 200 articles a week in Acrobat. You have added an unacceptable amount of time to my work and fully extended my week! I can hardly keep up battling with these documents now. It's like it has a mind of its own. These hopeless scroll bars. once actuated, respond so slowly that I have to wait, sometimes a minute or more just to see where I land on the page. I've been using Acrobat since V1. This is by far the largest "flub" you've ever made in Acrobat. If I could find another platform I would... and drop this app. The sooner you can revert this to the ancient scroll bars the better! This so-called "modernization" is absolute havoc. Do a serious usability study before you make non-constructive changes like this to your interface. I'd be happy to offer my time. As I'm sure a host of others here would. For the time being, this just sucks! Redevelopment time shouldn't take anywhere near this long. In the meantime, we're suffering out here!!!! FIX IT!

Adobe provided me the following link which is supposed to address the scrollbar issue. After following the instructions in the link below and testing, although the scroll bars are not immediately visible, the vertical scrollbar does appear upon using the scroll wheel on my mouse and I can click and drag the vertical scroll bar.

As for horizontal scrolling, one must hold down the Shift key while using the scroll wheel on the mouse to achieve horizontal scrolling. While the horizontal scrollbar does appear, it immediately disappears after you stop scrolling and seemingly cannot be dragged like the vertical scroll bar.

Thanks. Got this far by myself…. Still a very poor scrolling experience when editing 200-300 a week. Slow and the action of using the scroll bars is a best awkward and in consistent.

Thanks, but this does not help when you do not use a mouse with a scroll wheel. I ONLY use a graphics tablet for all my computer navigation.

Unfortunately, you'll need to uninstall Acrobat. Then, download the base version installer from this link:

https://helpx.adobe.com/acrobat/kb/acrobat-dc-downloads.html

Then, download and install the updater for the last version to support the "legacy" scroll bar framework which I believe was 2023.003.20201 using this link:

https://www.adobe.com/devnet-docs/acrobatetk/tools/ReleaseNotesDC/index.html

From there, restore your settings and plugins and such.
