Re: How to enable scroll bar?

The problem is back.
In build 23.6.20320.0 the scroll bars disappear. My mac is set to show allways. Acrobat is set to never.
The only way to show scroll bars is to launch Acrobat switch to Mac settings disable scroll bars allways and turn on again. Now the scroll bars appears in Acrobat. After a restart of Acrobat the scroll bars are disabled again.

I'm using 23.006.20320.0 too, and this workaround does make scrolbars visible for me, but they only let me scroll the visible page. I can't quickly skim through all the pages in the document.

HI, Meenakshi,

thanks for the response. After I turn off "Always show document size", the hovering works. But its so unpracticle. I have to check many pdfs daily, its really time consuming to hover over every document. Why its not working "Always show document size"?

And could you help us, please, also with scroll bars. I need them visible all the time.

Thanks

Richard

Came here to say the same thing. Checking "always show document size" now means it doesn't show at all, and unchecking it means I can see it if I hover. Do you know what's more useful than being able to show/hide the document size? Being able to look at it immediately with my eyes, without having to do anything else at all.
Please @Meenakshi Negi do something to fix this. I've lost a lot of productivity over the last week because of this "upgrade."

This doesn't provide a useful scroll bar that lets you move between pages in the document.

A scrollbar like this is visible when viewing the same PDF in version 2023.006.20320 running in Windows 10, so it's presumably not an issue with the PDF.

The Page Thumbnails display is no substitute, as the thumbnails are unreadably small.

View > Page Display > Enable Scrolling adds a scroll bar that sort-of works, though it doesn't respect the system preference about scrollbars always being visible (which I have ticked). But it's also no good, because you can't scroll from page to page using the arrow keys (which scroll a much smaller amount) or Page Up/Page Down (which can scroll by more than 1 document page, so the page boundaries move around).

I have the same problem. The hidden scroll bars are useless when you are using a Wacom tablet or pointing device besides a mouse or trackpad. Now there also isn't an indication that there is more than one page to a pdf unless you waste more screen space leaving the pages panel open all the time, which supposedly removing the scroll bars was going to help with.

All this page says is that Adobe changed the scrolling framework. We already knew that! That's the problem!

This version, 2023.006.20320, makes the app unusable. It is impossible to revert to previous versions in CC. Adobe, stop assuming that you know best what kind of interface people want to use. Give them options ā€“ like, keep the scrollbar always visible.

Yes, please fix this ASAP so that Acrobat respects the Mac system preference when it's set to "Always show scroll bars". This worked fine until the latest update (2023.006.20320), which now makes the document navigation extremely clumsy for those are accustomed to navigating using a device other than a trackpad. Acrobat is now the only app on my Mac that fails to respect the system preference.

Dear Meenakshi, please request that the development team allow a setting to make the scroll bar view visible - for users who have been using the scroll bar for many years, it is jarring not to have it visible. I'm sure I'll adjust, but I much prefer the scroll bar to be visible: I use it as a guide to show how far I am into a PDF, and how much I have left to review. Thank you!

Hi jennyh98229228,

Thank you for reaching out, and sorry about the trouble caused.

We appreciate your valuable feedback! We're always looking for ways to make Acrobat better, and we appreciate the time and effort you have taken to share your thoughts with us.

As you mentioned about the scroll bar, this has been reported to the team, and they are looking into this. In the meantime, please refer to the information provided here: https://community.adobe.com/t5/acrobat-discussions/acrobat-scroll-framework-upgrades-for-macos/td-p/...

We acknowledge that the new Acrobat represents a notable change. However, we hope that as you get familiar with the new interface, you can be more productive & get more out of Acrobat. To learn more about the new Acrobat, you may refer to the following featured post: https://community.adobe.com/t5/acrobat-discussions/learn-about-new-acrobat/td-p/14078856.

As we made these changes in the interface, we have tried to ensure all tools & features that are currently supported retain their familiar functionalities and workflows as they did in the previous version. We are committed to addressing any gaps or issues reported by users related to any break in current workflows in all our past & upcoming releases. In case any of your current workflows are not functioning as expected, do share them with us on this thread, and we will address them with the highest priority.

As I see on the information linked, horizontal scrolling can now be done only by using shift + mouse scroll wheel? There is no option at all to have a visible scroll bar to click and drag? My scroll wheel is mostly broken so now the only thing I can do is swap to the pan (hand) tool and drag the page around (office hardware, can't replace at the moment).

Even if my mouse scroll wheel was working, why would I prefer to use two hands on two different devices to do a frequent and simple task that I previously only needed one hand for, to just click and drag the scroll bar? And apart from that, the ergonomics of using a standard scroll wheel are awful, and I need to use the click-and-drag scrollbar method often to save my scrolling finger from literal constant, 24/7 pain! These issues are not a joke or just a matter of simple preference. For users who use this software professionally, 40+ hours a week, these small changes have genuinely serious consequences.

Even if the scroll bars "must" be hidden by default (genuinely, I do not care about the 3 mm of "wasted" screen real estate they take up. This has never been an issue. The scrollbars more than earn their keep on the screen.), please please PLEASE at least make them visible and functional on hovering  (not just while actively scrolling by other means), so users can click and drag. And I'd really want an option to keep them displayed at all times. I use the scroll bar to gauge my progress through long documents at a glance literally hundreds of times every single day. Iā€™m not compromising my actual health and mobility for this one, but itā€™s a serious annoyance to not be able to do this nonetheless.

Having no visibile scroll bars (both vertical and horizontal & having a scroll bar in the page thumbnail side bar) is a disastrous change. I'm using Mac OS Ventura 13.6 and Acrobat 2003.006.20320. The scrollbars don't even appear on hover. And I do NOT ever want to use automatic scrolling. One should have the option of making scrollbars visible. Please fix this ASP.

@Meenakshi Negi Can you provide any update on whether there is any plan to fix this problem of the scroll bar not always being visible, and if so, an approximate timeline?

Today [2023-11-06] I see a new update to Acrobat Pro (2023.006.20360) that still does not fix this problem.

Unless there is a preference for this that I have not been able to find.

Many of us are fed up with "feedback for the team".  You guys have screwed up a huge sector of biometical researchers, who rely on Acrobat to read papers from journals.  You cannot imagine the wasted time you have caused.

This "feedback for the team" line is a way of saying "we don't care about you".  If only there were an Apple alternative and I could dispense with un-creative cloud altogether.

I'm starting to think we (the users) are now just talking to each other ("preaching to the choir") about this idiotic scrollbar issue. I've seen no indication in many weeks that anyone from Adobe is paying any attention to this thread at all.

In the meantime, I just found this article about Acrobat alternatives, which I'm about to spend some time studying.

Dear Adobe,

What is it going to take? How much dissatisfaction from the field you serve will turn the tide and get a scroll bar back? New design philosophies, trends, aesthetics are not reasons for removing essential tools. We're all smart -- we can find the awkward and laborious workarounds and eventually get our tasks done. But why when it had been so easy? Sophisticated technology still has to deal with human beings. It used to be called human factor engineering. Please PLEASE hark back to the old days when tech was all about bringing efficiency not trying to just look sexy. Trying so hard to be "kind and respectful" here as we are asked to do in this community. Please hear us.

Hi,

It's not really about getting used to the interface as much as it's just taking away flexibility for users to adapt the interface to their own workflow. I exclusively use a pen tablet and the 'mouse scrolling' or using the wheel on the tablet is not a fix that helps the omission of a scroll bar. This is incredily frustrating that we're just expected to just get used to bad design.

Exactly my same setup. I have used this for over 30 years. Its like breathing for me. In a production environment, it really sucks to have to re-train my instincts just because some designer thinks its something better. Trust us, IT IS NOT BETTER!!

I have a suggestion for you. The next time you and your cadre of plonkers consider changing the look and feel of your app: DON'T. It's really that simple. I sometimes wonder how many thousands of man hours of your customer's time you waste because of your clever new improvements.

Greetings. Why did you guys destroy thirty years of interface behavior? The only way I get a scroll bar is View>Page Display>Automatically scroll. Then I turn that off every time I want to read. I've lost hope that this will be fixed and lost half a day tracking down this thread.
