Reader 9 won't open PDF from web browser

New Here ,
Jul 05, 2008 Jul 05, 2008
I just installed Reader 9, and now when I click on a link to a PDF on a web page I get this message: "The Adobe Acrobat/Reader that is running cannot be used to view PDF files in a web browser. Adobe Acrobat/Reader version 8 or 9 is required. Please exit and try again." Since I AM running version 9, this seems peculiar. Any ideas?

I can figure out how to fix this problem but how do you prevent it in the first place? I work at a place with over 200 users and we are updating them to version 9.3.1. It doesn't happen to everybody but still a high percentage. It's an inconvenience to update the machine, wait for the user to complain about the issue, and have to go back and fix it. Is there a way to prevent it in the first place? Any ideas would be appreciated. Thank you.

This can easily corrected in a Transform (MST), perhaps even using the Adobe Customization Wizard Tool.  Are you going to be using any tools like that to customize the package before deploying it?  If so, let me know and I will provide instructions.

I've used the customization wizard tool before but how would I use it to prevent this? Thanks.

Using the "Adobe Customization Wizard":

1) Open the vendor MSI (File > Open Package > AcroRead.msi)

2) Load your previous Transform (Transform > Load Transform... > Your Custom MST)

3) Drill down to the EXE value in the Registry Section (Registry > [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\SOFTWARE\Adobe\Acrobat\Exe)

4) Change the "(Default)" value data entry to include quotation marks (Original value = [AS_HKCR_EXE] / New Value = "[AS_HKCR_EXE]")

5) Save you MST and Test.

After installation, you should be able to drill down to the value and see that the entry does now include quotation marks.

* This is only going to initally be set for new installations.

** To force this package to reinstall on systems that already have it, use the "/FAMSUV" switch to force a reinstall.

     (Example: MsiExec /FAMSUV "%FullPath%\AcroRead.msi" TRANSFORMS="%NameOfYourMST%" /Passive REBOOT=ReallySuppress)

Hope this helps.

READ PEOPLE...THIS WAS ADDRESSED BY A POST 1 JULY....THAT SOLUTION WORKS.  YOU CAN

NOT OPEN IN BROWSER WINDOW...YOU CAN OPEN AFTER DOWNLOAD IN PDF WINDOW...DESELECT THE "OPEN IN BROWSER" UNDER EDIT - PREFERENCES - INTERNET.  YOU NEED TO OPEN ACROBAT FROM YOUR START MENU TO ADDRESS THIS PROBLEM.

That may well work, but is not a viable solution in an Enterprise environment.  Also, this would force them to download the PDF instead of opening it within IE which may not be the desired configuration.

BTW, I think your CAPS LOCK key is stuck.

Hit caps look by mistake..sorry. As far as the solution viability, this is the best solution so far in any environment. If you need to get a PDF, this works. The "bug" in the new version of this reader is Adobe's issue. I am sure that they will have a fix for those in your environment. Microsoft will set on its heels and not try to wrap the browser dependant on Adobe issues. If you need the PDF, regardless of your environment, you need to do this fix...period.

So basiaclly your saying that in a large environment (say 5000+ users), you would simply have them do this manually instead of automating a solution?

No, I am saying that now you need this solution if you are going to cross platform or publish PDF's. The solution is a fix from Adobe to the latest release. Enough pressure from the needy should get that done.

I had the same problem. My O/S in Win 7 Ultimate. I use I.E.8  32 bit.   I dis-installed Adobe Reader 9 and re-installed Reader 8 and all now seems to be working well.

I assume that in due time Adobe will issue an update which will work in Win 7 and Vista? Alternatively has this problem arisen out of an automatic update either from Microsoft or Adobe which needs to be repaired by a patch file or removed?

Try Googling Abode Reader

I think you're getting the names mixed up. Adobe Reader IS free and Adobe Acrobat (pro and standard) costs money. Adobe Acrobat is not actually called Reader. If you purchased JUST Adobe Reader and it wasn't packaged with other software, then the company that sold it to you is breaking the licensing agreement (and the law). If they don't refund your money, I would suggest contacting Adobe. Maybe they can help. Good luck!

My Adobe Reader 9 (just updated from previous version) has the same issue as the first post,

but I don't get an error messge. A new page opens, but the PDF will not open.

I have to download the linked file to open it. Very cumbersome.

I have a MAC Power PC (non-Intel)

I have already uninstalled all Adobe Reader files. Cleaned out my trash.

Re-installed Adobe Reader 9, but still with the same issues.

Adobe REader 9 worked after new unistall, reinstall on my  Windows PC .

How do I get it to work on a MAC power pc?

most of the support answers on this forum address Windows computers.

Open the Reader. Under edit, select preferences. Under preferences select internet. Uncheck the "open PDF in browser. Close reader. Problem solved.

Hi,

I unchecked "Display PDF in browser using:.....", that was my only

option that was similar to what you said.

there was no option to uncheck "open PDF in Browser" as you said

now when I try to open a PDF file link I get an error message stating

"unable to load Plug-in"....etc...with a long error message....

Dianna,

I only posted that I was having a problem.  I did not post any fixes.  There have been others who have made suggestions.  I am still struggling with the same problem as before.

For enterprise here is what you are doing wrong.  I made this mistake too

Open up the acroread.msi with the custom wizard

on the 1st or 2nd option you have 3 choice at the top

1. Let the machine decided what to open a pdf with

2. Let reader be the default if you have both reader and pro

3. Let pro be the default if you have both reader and pro.

I choose 3 and from that point on I could no one longer open PDFs inside IE.

I went back and chose option 1 and it was working again.  Try that.

In IE8 on a Win XP machine the following fixed it for me -

Uncheck the "Do not save encrypted files to disk" under Tools/Internet Options, Advanced Tab, Security section.

So it would be worth trying to find an equivalent setting in your browser (Safari?) related to saving files/encryption and turning it off.

Best of luck!

Martin
