I mistakenly installed Adobe Reader DC on my system. It did not ask if I wanted to keep the old version - it is gone. I can not get the DC version to open at all much less open any documents I read the Forum discussion and the knowledge articles about un-checking Enable Protected Mode at startup, checked that it wasn't the 64 bit and several other topics. Could not get it to work. Want to go back to XI, but I still get the message a newer version is installed. Uninstalled thru programs in Control Panel, used the Adobe Reader and Acrobat Cleaner Tool, the Windows Fix-It program remover tools. My antivirus is off and I am running it as administrator. When I try to reinstall XI, I still get told there is a newer version installed, forces me to close it and reopens the Adobe window in my browser to tell me the install failed and removes the install file I just downloaded. I am doing all this under a clean boot because I have a program I can't locate that is messing up my installs. Using the clean boot seems to work nicely. Are there any other ideas that someone has? At this point I just want Adobe reader XI back. The file I am using as install is from this page: Adobe Acrobat Reader DC Install for all versions (where I am not forced into only the choice of the DC version) - Reader 11.0.0.10 English for Windows.
Windows 10 Pro 64 bit
HP Envy 15 with plenty of hard drive space
Thanks for any ideas!
OK I found the answer. Went to this file:
C:\ProgramData\Adobe\Acrobat\11.0\Replicate\Security and took ownership. The installation finished with further problems.
