reader update requires re-boot and locks from viewing pdf

Trying to open a pdf attachment to an email message, reader informed me that an update was needed. It offered no option to postpone the update. I was effective blocked from using reader until I rebooted. I've read very old (2012) posts here that elude to some sort of preference or option that one can configure to avoid this situation but it's not clear how to configure that. Bear in mind that a re-boot may involve applying windows update, which can make a re-boot very time consuming. In my case this particular re-boot took 20-25 minutes!

Please. If there's a way to avoid the reader putting me into this predicament, can someone let me know how?

Thanks.

Message was edited by: Phil Richcreek Just to clarify. I do use the free reader. However, I also have a subscription to the Adobe Export PDF, which is not free. When reader locks me out, I have not found a way to get to my pay-for Export PDF.Is there a way to do that?
