Recovering files after "The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable"

I have pdf's saved on a USB drive.  Recently when I put in the USB drive it asked me to format the drive.  I clicked no and received the following message:  "The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable".  Does this mean I lost EVERYTHING?! Can I get these files back?

Try the usb drive on another computer.  This sometimes works.
