Unable to preview or print PDF documents specifically in IE

Within the last week, we lost the ability to open or print PDF documents from websites.  Receiving at 523:523 error code.  This is only happening when using IE11.  We are able to open successfully in Edge and Chrome.   Several of the portals we use recommend the use of IE in order to get all functionality.    Seems there might have been an update issue causing the inability to open/print PDF docs.   Anyone else experiencing this or have a suggestion on remedy?   We've reviewed settings and tried various approaches.    Suggestions (other than use one of the browsers that works)?

I read a message (a long time ago so I don't remember the details) but I think that Microsoft *locks* IE so only the addons that Microsoft approves may be used

If you have had a Windows update recently, that may be the cause of your problem
