So when the sheets are printed, there's a relatively large gap between the two pages, but I need it to be smaller. Is it possible to reduce the size of that gap?

I'm using Acrobat Reader.

There is no such option. The print booklet option is a poor man's solution and not a full fledged imposition tool.

See here for more information: https://helpx.adobe.com/acrobat/kb/print-booklets-acrobat-reader.html.

Sometimes, the printer may also have options to print as booklet. Depending on the printer, those options range from very primitive to highly sophisticated. You may investigate also that route.
