We suddenly can't print .pdfs on our HP large format printer. It only asks if we want to save the pdf as an xps file. Then says it's an error no matter what we try to do. Our AutoCAD files all print fine.
We are using Windows 7 and have never had this problem. Been doing fine for years.

Hi Davidk,
Please try once the steps provided below:
- Launch the PDF and click on the Print icon.
- In the Print window, click on the Advanced tab.
- In the Advanced Print Setup window, check if "Print to file" option is marked.
- If yes, unmark the option and click on the OK tab at the bottom of that window.
Check if that resolves the issue.
If that is not the case, share the screenshot of the error message you get and the exact workflow you do.
To share the screenshot, use the steps provided below:
- Click on the insert icon provided in the reply window as shown below:
- An Insert Image window will appear.
- Then click on Insert Image and browse the location where you have saved the screenshot file.
- Select the file and click on Open > Insert Image.
Also, check if the issue occurs with all the PDFs.
We will be waiting for your response.
Let us know if you need any help.
Regards,
Meenakshi

It sounds like Windows 7 is defaulting the HP printer to an XPS driver instead of the actual HP PDF driver. Try reinstalling the HP driver package, then set the correct printer as default and disable the “Microsoft XPS Document Writer.” That usually fixes the “save as XPS” loop.
Older systems like Windows 7 often develop driver conflicts over time same way home service devices do. I deal with this a lot when helping local businesses keep their equipment running smoothly, including partners like appliancerepairok who rely on dependable office printers for service calls.
A clean driver reinstall is the quickest fix here. If that doesn’t work, remove all HP entries in Devices and Printers and reinstall fresh.
