Abode Acrobat Reader cannot edit Dropbox files

  1. Open Dropbox and select a file (say file.pdf) to edit in Acrobat Reader
  2. Acrobat Reader opens and displays the document
  3. Edit file.pdf in Acrobat Reader and markup the file
  4. Upload a new file to Dropbox with the same name as file.pdf.  This will overwrite the file in Dropbox.
  5. Open Dropbox and select the new file.pdf to edit in Acrobat Reader
  6. Acrobat Reader opens and displays the old marked up version of file.pdf, not the new version that was uploaded to Dropbox

It looks like Adobe Acrobat is caching the file by file name and will only allow you to edit the original file that you marked up even though you requested to edit the new file that was uploaded to Dropbox.

I have to upload the new file to dropbox and rename the file to a new file name that Adobe Reader doesn’t know about and then open it and edit it.

That means that I upload a document to Dropbox, edit the file in Adobe Acrobat reader.  When I upload a file with the same name to dropbox it will replace the original file.  Now when I open the new file in Adobe Acrobat it displays the old file that it marked up.  So I have to upload the file as a different name just so that Adobe Acrobat doesn’t get confused.  Because Adobe Acrobat can’t distinguish between a file with the same name as a previous file that it edited.

I would expect that if I open a file from Dropbox it will open the Dropbox file not open a marked up version of the file that Adobe somehow thinks is the latest version.
