Hi

You posted in the orphaned forum Acrobat Reader Mobile (beta) which currently has one other post asking why this forum exists. It sounds as though you are not using the Beta version. Please confirm what you are using and we can move your post if you are not using the Beta.

Files created in Acrobat DC should be able to be opened in Acrobat Reader for Android.

  • Is it just the one file? Have you tried others?
  • Can it be opened by Acrobat Reader for desktop?
  • Do you get an error message?

There is an issue with forms created with LiveCycle. They won't open in Reader for Android or iOS. You said the PDF was saved with Acrobat DC. Was it also created there?

Hello Jane,

Thank you for responding to my post.

I am using the Adobe Reader for Android that is currently offered on Google Play.

It shows on the Android phone as Version 22.71.23191.

If there is a later version that will open files saved with Adobe Acrobat DC I would like to have access to it.

Is is not just one file, it is any file that is created in a DC version of Acrobat.  The files open fine on a desktop in Windows with Adobe Reader DC.  The error message on the Android phone is "This form requires Adobe Acrobat Reader DC for Mac or Windows" even though it's on the phone.

How does one get a more current version than the one offered on Google Play?

Thanks.

That's the same message that displays when the form was created in LiveCycle and there is no getting around it. I haven't heard that it applies elsewhere, but posssibly another volunteer will chime in.

In a desktop version, can you go to File > Properties > Description (the first tab) and tell us what it says for the Application and PDF Producer?

Can the phone open PDF forms that others have created? Try Form 1040 (fillable) for instance. (Make sure you get the one from the IRS dot gov website!)

The message you are getting says it's a form. Is there anything unique about the forms you are creating?

Hello Jane,

As you predicted, the document was created with Live Cycle.

It is a fillable form.  I don't see anything unique about it.  It, too, is a government form.  It does have some of the fields already filled in, perhaps that's pertinent.

I can open IRS form 1040 on my phone with Adobe Reader for Android, but I cannot fill it in without DC for Mac or Windows.  At least the form opens so I can read it.  No editable fields are populated.  The LiveCycle version it was created with is Version ES 9.0.

So, I guess the clearer questions is how does one open a LiveCycle form on a phone, if only to read the form and not fill it in?

Thanks, again.

Ed

Hi Ed,

As the alert message says, you cannot open LiveCycle forms on Android or iOS for mobile. It requires the desktop Reader.

I can try to search the forums and Google tomorrow for the reasons, but will be out of my office for the rest of today.

Thanks for checking a second time about the LiveCycle part.

Hi Ed

I found this that may help. The reason may be that LiveCycle Designer is an XFA form.

Most commonly asked questions about forms on Acrobat Reader Mobile App.

At times users experience some issues, while working with the PDF forms. Here are some most commonly asked questions and their answers.

1- Does Acrobat Reader support XFA forms?

No. Acrobat Reader cannot open dynamic or static XFA forms created with LiveCycle Designer.

Are these forms still being producing in your office using LiveCycle? I'm asking because LiveCycle reached End of Support and has been replaced by Adobe Experience Manager (AEM).

I have one other thought for you. You asked if users can read the form without filling it in.

  • In Adobe Acrobat, you can export to JPEG. I don't know if LifeCycle forms allow the same. I have used LifeCycle, but stopped when it was removed from macOS and became Windows only.
  • If you can't export to JPEG, take a screenshot with the Snipping Tool, which is built in to Windows OS.

I hope this helps.

@eelkes

I'm happy to help, Ed. At least you know why the PDFs aren't opening in the mobile app.

I don't work for Adobe, but I wonder if the issues with LiveCycle and XFA is part or all of the reason it is no longer supported and has been replaced by AEM. (Personal opinion only)
