adobe reader issues with viewing pdf

Recently started having trouble when working with pdfs in Reader.  I can open and see a document, but if I click in it (or if I open a pdf form to fill-in), the screen turns black (or somewhat like a negative of a photo - it has some colors within the black, and I can type in the form but I can't see it because it's blacked out).

It will clear when I click in the scroll bar (or did for a while, but now is hard to clear the black at all).  It also will retain the black over a portion of the document even when I am able to clear the black.  I've uninstalled and reinstalled Reader to no avail.   Also uninstalled Avast and just using Windows defender in case that's the problem, but still have a problem.  Can anyone help?
