From what I can tell this file is supposed to be rather small. does anyone know if it can be deleted safely? I am running low on space and need to make some room. This is the first unexplainable large file that I would like to get rid of.

I would be very wary of deleting this. But it's hard to say, especially as Acrobat XI is now past end of support. You might break updating or uninstalling it. If you delete it, make a backup. As always with deleting, a handy first step is to rename the folder.
