There is another similar post on the forum but it is inconclusive or doesn't help.

I have a windows 10 PC. I have NOT installed adobe touch.  When I click on programs the app is shown and it asks whether I want to install it. To me this indicates that it isn't installed. Also I cannot see an adobe folder in my programs folder. Finally, when I search in settings, adobe reader or reader touch are not in the list.

When I try to install adobe reader from the adobe site it goes through the process and then says that there is already a more up to date version of adobe installed!!!

If there is a more up to date version, where is it and how do I get rid of it?

What I am trying to do is download a document from the UK HMRC website and complete it but when I do this I get the following message:

"Please wait... If this message is not eventually replaced by the proper contents of the document, your PDF viewer may not be able to display this type of document. You can upgrade to the latest version of Adobe Reader for Windows®, Mac, or Linux® by visiting http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html. For more assistance with Adobe Reader visit http://www.adobe.com/support/products/ acrreader.html."

Of course, I do wait but nothing happens and the sites I am directed to are simply generic adobe sites that seem to provide no help.

You must download the file, and view it in Reader. Start Reader, then use Open from the File menu.

Hey GrahamWT,

Sorry to hear about the frustrating experience.

Looking at the description given above, I believe you are struggling with the two issues here-

A. While downloading the document from website, you got the message shown above, "Please wait...." and have been redirected to download Adobe Reader DC.

B. When you were redirected to Adobe Reader website to download it, it shows a message on screen "Newer version is already installed..."

Correct me if I'm wrong?

In above scenario, you need to download the the PDF or save it locally and then open it through Adobe Reader (as suggested by TSN as well)

  • However, the very first thing you need to do is download Adobe Reader DC. If it says newer version if already installed, then you may refer this help article where you'll see the troubleshooting steps for this error: Error 1722 while installing/updating Acrobat DC/Acrobat Reader DC on Windows
  • Rename the .dll files as suggested, and install Reader DC.
  • Once done, open the file in Reader and let us know if that helps!

Thanks,

Akanchha
