If there's nothing in the Comments panel then you can't do it using the free Reader, as the highlight is a part of the static contents of the file.

in the bar on top select the arrow selecting tool - next to the hand,  and click on the highlight area then click delete... depending on how many times you highlighted it, it removes 1 layer every click.  hope this helps someone.  another way is to right click and then chose delete....
