Opening a large PDF on an old ipad 2 breaks file in adobe cloud

So, I recently dug up my old ipad 2 to use as a pdf-reader. Due to COVID I'm stuck with PDFs as books at home for uni, and just sitting behind my desk 24/7 is driving me nuts. Using the ipad would give me some space to move around my room.

However with the ipad I'm working with an old version of the app (version 20.09.00), and I think this is creating issues. When I open my books (around 800 pages per PDF) on my tablet it takes (expectedly) some time to load, but if I then save them back into the adobe cloud and attempt to open them on my laptop adobe acrobat freezes and it takes a long time (like 15 minutes) to open the pdf, even if I have made barely any markings in the document. Is there any way I can fix this issue? Maybe some third-party apps?
