I found the solution to this problem. The issue was due to a change in options from a Firefox update and I was able to restore the function by going to Options/ Applications/PDF file and selecting the Always Ask option, which specifies what app to use to download specific file types. Probably a kindergarten solution to most of you, but thought I would post it for the less adept folks like me.
